The Gilded Gauntlet: Ambrus Duel Quest Guide
The Gilded Gauntlet in Blood of Dawnwalker: how Ambrus's anger unlocks the first Boyar duel, the Bittersweet Toast poison shortcut, and the drain-or-kill ending.
The Gilded Gauntlet is the first of the three Boyar boss quests in The Blood of Dawnwalker — and the game’s first real exam. No adds, no arena hazards, no escape hatch: just Coen, Ambrus, and every fundamental the beginner guide told you to practice. This page covers the quest flow; the move-by-move duel tactics live in the Ambrus boss guide.

How the Quest Unlocks
Ambrus rules through force, and his duel is unlocked the way his whole operation works — by making him angry:
- Clear roughly three-quarters of Ambrus’s court activities — his Transports, Collectors, Prisoners, Cellars, and Dungeons chains. Most cost 3 of the day’s 16 time segments.
- When his anger meter maxes, The Gilded Gauntlet appears as a main quest.
- Save before ringing the bell. Summoning him costs 2 time segments, and a fresh manual save turns a lost duel from a setback into a retry.
The court activities guide has the routing, and the Ambrus boss guide notes his low level gate — the duel is a mechanics check, not a stat check. A patient player with starter gear can win.
The Bittersweet Toast: The Poison Shortcut
Before the duel, a servant named Iulian Codrin approaches with a plot to poison Ambrus’s pre-duel toast. It is the most consequential side beat attached to any Boyar quest:
- Politely refuse the toast and Ambrus drinks from Iulian instead — becoming fully poisoned.
- A fully poisoned Ambrus doubles over mid-fight as magical poison eats his health. You can win by dodging alone.
- On Duelist difficulty, this is effectively the intended approach — the poison trivializes what is otherwise the hardest version of the fight.
Skipping the plot is viable; engaging it is optimal. The full decision tree is in the Ambrus boss guide.
The Duel at a Glance
The fight itself is a two-phase parry exam:
Phase one is gold-pip management — safe lights and perfect parries build pips for your counters. His three unblockable strings (spinning overhand, rising slash, figure-8 advance) are the test; each has a distinct tell and dodge answer. Phase two adds a rage mode with faster swings and a sweeping AOE — which is secretly your biggest damage window, since a well-dodged sweep leaves him open for two free hits.
Circle left, never trade, and perfect-parry the slow overhead. That sentence wins the duel.
The Ending Choice: Drain or Kill
When Ambrus’s health is nearly gone, a cinematic pauses the fight: drain his blood or kill him outright.
- Kill him: clean, complete, quest over.
- Drain him: you gain his Scarlet Shield ability (or +1 to it), visit the vrakhiri afterlife realm once, and get the option to let his soul ride along. No documented downside — he comments during exploration and assists in the Brencis fight. Most players drain and accept.
Rewards
Winning The Gilded Gauntlet pays: 500 XP, a skill point, Ambrus’s epic sword, and a legendary heavy chestpiece — one of the best early armor spikes in the game, and a cornerstone of the legendary equipment hunt. With the drain, add Scarlet Shield to the list.
When to Do The Gilded Gauntlet
Ambrus’s duel benefits from early completion more than the other two Boyar quests. His rewards — a skill point, an epic sword, and a legendary heavy chestpiece — arrive exactly when the mid-game armor curve bites hardest, and the parry fundamentals the duel drills into you pay compound interest through Bakir’s tournament and every human-form fight after. The only reason to delay is the Bittersweet Toast: if you want the poison plot available, let Iulian Codrin approach before you ring the bell. Once the bell rings, the window closes for that attempt.
After the Quest
One Boyar down, two to go. The natural next targets are Bakir’s Lunar Game and Xanthe’s Cycle of Love — the boss order guide sequences all three, and the best quest order guide fits them around the ally chains.
Frequently Asked Questions
What level for The Gilded Gauntlet? Low-level accessible per PowerPyx. Positioning and parry timing matter more than stats.
Can I miss the Bittersweet Toast? Yes — it is a time-limited approach window before the duel. If you ring the bell first, the plot is gone for that attempt.
Is draining Ambrus evil? The game does not judge. Mechanically it is strictly upside; narratively it is one of the early signs of what Coen is becoming.
Does the duel gate anything? It is a main quest — the story continues after — but no ending is gated on how you win it, only on ally questlines and final-quest dialogue.
