How to Beat Ayman in the Cathedral
There is no Ayman in Blood of Dawnwalker - the cathedral fights are Mihai and Xanthe. How to reach both, beat both, and what each pays out.

First things first, because this page exists for a search that deserves a straight answer: there is no character named Ayman in The Blood of Dawnwalker. No boss, no NPC, no codex entry - across the game’s published guides, wikis, and official materials, the name does not appear. What players are almost always looking for when they search “Ayman cathedral” is one of the two real cathedral fights: Mihai, the tormented swordsman in the crypt below Svartrau Cathedral, or Xanthe, the Dark Mistress performing her ritual at the cathedral altar. Both are covered here - how to reach them, how to beat them, and what each pays. If you arrived hunting someone else entirely, the all bosses ranked page is the full roster.
The Cathedral’s Two Fights
Svartrau Cathedral hosts two separate encounters at opposite ends of its structure, in two different quest threads:
| Fight | Where in the cathedral | Quest | Pays |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xanthe, the Dark Mistress | The altar, night only | Interrupt her ritual (no quest flag required) | Blood Surge (if drained), Corrupted Pendant, finale support (if spared) |
| Mihai, Patron Saint | The hidden crypt, behind a wall | A Monk and a Saint | The Broken Sword of St. Mihai (legendary hilt) |
Beating Xanthe at the Altar
The cathedral’s upper fight is available startlingly early: at night, the front gate locks and the renovation scaffolding becomes the entrance - climb, drop through a gap, and head for the altar, where Xanthe runs a blood ritual for the Blood Guards attended by Knight Bannerets. Clear the bannerets first; their basic sword strings are trivial next to what she casts.
Xanthe is a level 25-30 encounter that does not scale down because you found her early - arriving under-leveled converts a duel into a lesson. Her loop:
- Block her tendril lashes by direction - they read like sword swings, and the same directional discipline applies.
- Dodge every glyph on the floor - the ground marks her area casts, and standing in them is the fight’s main damage source.
- Destroy the blood orbs the instant she floats away. At two health thresholds she teleports up and siphons red orbs to heal back the segment you just removed. Killing the orbs cancels the siphon and staggers her; leaving them alive makes the fight unwinnable. She does this exactly twice - handle both and the health bar stays handled.
The early-kill route has a cost: no spare is offered in the cathedral version. Killing or draining her is the only menu, so spare-seekers should take the long route - nine court quests to max her Anger, then The Cycle of Love at the Howling Keep - where kill, drain, or spare are all on the table and the Xanthe choice guide applies. The full fight breakdown is on the Xanthe boss page; the quest framing is A Monk and a Saint for the crypt half of the building.
Beating Mihai in the Crypt
The crypt fight is quest-locked and methodical. During A Monk and a Saint, the cathedral’s clues (the Golden Chalice by day, a fresco and a dead thief by night) converge on a side courtyard grave - the fourth from the left - which opens the crypt. Inside, follow the moaning to the wall, inspect it, and tear it down: Mihai, buried alive and gone mad in Torpor, attacks.
Mihai is a skilled swordsman with a smoke gimmick - he disappears and fills the area, then strikes from concealment. The counter-play is perceptual: use directional blocks defensively, watch for the unblockable tells, and treat the smoke phases as defense drills rather than damage races. Community coverage calls him a run-of-the-mill fight by this game’s standards - perhaps deliberately, reflecting how far the Patron Saint has fallen. The victory awards the Broken Sword of St. Mihai: not the finished legendary, but its hilt - the fragments must still be recovered and the blade reforged (see the legendary equipment list for the full chain).
So Who Is “Ayman”?
The pattern behind the misnomer is easy to trace: the cathedral’s two bosses have uncommon names, the game’s cast is dense, and guides get paraphrased from memory. “Ayman” does not map cleanly onto either Mihai or Xanthe - it is simply a garbled reference that stuck in search data. Two honest notes:
- If you were searching from a specific guide or video that used the name, treat that source’s cathedral boss as one of the two above and verify against the quest name it cited.
- If a future update or DLC introduces an actual Ayman, this page’s framing will need a revisit - as of the current game version, the roster above is complete.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a boss named Ayman in Blood of Dawnwalker? No. The cathedral fights are Mihai (crypt) and Xanthe (altar); neither is called Ayman in any official or community source.
Which cathedral boss is harder? Xanthe, and it is not close - her orb-siphon mechanic and level 25-30 budget outclass Mihai’s smoke duel. The boss order page places both in the run’s flow.
Can Xanthe be fought in the cathedral and still spared later? No - the early cathedral kill forecloses the spare. The spare requires the court-quest route; see the choice guide.
What is Mihai’s fight for? The legendary sword thread - his defeat awards the Broken Sword of St. Mihai and opens the reforge chain.
