Mushroom Rings: What They Do & Rewards

Mushroom rings in Blood of Dawnwalker: what the fairy circles mean, how they lead to Sanzhana burrows, where they appear, and the rewards at the end of the trail.

Mushroom Rings cover

Spot a ring of mushrooms glowing faintly on a forest floor in The Blood of Dawnwalker and you have found the game’s politest invitation: a Sanzhana trail marker. These fairy circles are not decoration, not crafting nodes, and not a trap - they are breadcrumbs left by the valley’s tooth-trading fairies, and following them leads to burrows, quest chains, and ultimately the only reward in the game that buys back the calendar. Here is what mushroom rings actually do, where they appear, and what the trail pays. The full Sanzhana quest list lives in the all Sanzhana locations guide.

What a Mushroom Ring Is

The mushroom ring - a neat circle of pale caps - marks Sanzhana activity. The Sanzhani are moth-winged fairies who live in hidden burrows and trade in teeth, silk, and secrets; their burrow entrances are deliberately unmarked, and the rings are how they signpost a path for anyone worth inviting. Functionally, a ring tells you three things:

  1. A burrow or quest anchor is nearby - usually within a short walk in the direction the trail continues.
  2. The area is part of a Sanzhana quest - the most famous being the ring trail in the Svartrau Outskirts that opens the entire faction storyline.
  3. You are probably being watched with great interest - the Sanzhani judge visitors by how they treat the trail.

Rings are flavor-first, mechanic-second: walking through one does nothing by itself. The value is entirely in what the ring points toward.

The Good Home Trail: Where Most Players Meet Their First Ring

The canonical mushroom-ring sequence opens the Sanzhana arc in the Svartrau Outskirts, north of the capital:

  1. Take the quest marker near the Sandy Gorge Shrine.
  2. Follow the suspicious fairy lights through the grass - the trail is punctuated by mushroom circles.
  3. The trail terminates at the burrow of Sanzhani Tsarina, the faction’s queen, who kicks off the five-quest chain that defines the faction.

That first trail is the gate for everything else: no other Sanzhana spawns until Tsarina has been met. Players who ignore the mushroom rings in the outskirts can wander past four more fairies later without ever realizing the chain exists. The quest itself - finding Tonis and bargaining for his sister’s freedom - is covered step by step in the Tonis choice guide.

Where Else Rings Appear

Beyond the tutorial trail, rings recur anywhere the Sanzhani operate: near burrows in the swampier corners of the valley, along routes toward Shrike’s Crag, and in forested regions where the light hits the moss right. The reliable detection method is night exploration - the rings read as faintly luminous circles in the dark, and Coen’s vampire senses make night the natural scouting window anyway. If a ring trail goes cold, switch to night and re-scan; several only fully light up after dark.

What the Trail Pays: Rewards at the End

Following rings is a network unlock, and the network pays in escalating layers:

  • Quest rewards per fairy: the five Sanzhana tasks pay in Lunka letters (endgame intel), trophies, and trade access.
  • The Arbiter component: one burrow holds a bundle of Silk Threads - a rare ingredient for the legendary Arbiter armor set.
  • The time extension: finishing all five quests lets Tsarina push Brencis’s coronation back a full day - the only known deadline extension in the game, and the single most valuable reward for calendar-tight runs.
  • Silver tip: the final Sanzhana, hidden in Svartrau itself, points out stashed silver as a thank-you - a small but pointed payout in the game’s contraband economy.

Common Mistakes with Mushroom Rings

  • Assuming they respawn or reset. Rings are static world markers; once followed, the trail stays solved.
  • Ignoring rings outside the Outskirts. The faction chain is sequential but not localized - later fairies hide far from the first trail.
  • Looting everything else first. The ring trail has no combat; it is safe, short, and unlocks the chain - do it early, ideally in week one, so the Lunka letters have days to accumulate.
  • Day-only scouting. Some trails are nearly invisible at noon; if the lights seem absent, come back at night.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do mushroom rings do anything when stepped on? Nothing direct - no buff, no damage, no trigger. They are signposts, not interactables.

Is the mushroom ring quest missable? No, but it is gateable: the chain stays available all game. However, the Lunka letters arrive one per completed task across multiple in-game days, so late starters lose intel value.

Are mushroom rings connected to the Chrysalis Rifts? Indirectly - both belong to the Sanzhana, and the faction’s rewards (time extension, silk threads) tie the two systems together, but rings themselves never mark a rift.
