Beast of Balaur Weakness & Drops in The Blood of Dawnwalker

Beast of Balaur weakness, drops, and rewards in The Blood of Dawnwalker: hellhound tactics, Psglov Claws, Hellhound Pelt, and the hidden Gladius behind Shadow Step.

Most players searching “Beast of Balaur weakness” want one of two things: what the hellhound is weak to in combat, or what it drops. This page answers both with the confirmed data from the launch window — and flags the hidden loot room that most walkthroughs mention only in passing.

For the full quest walkthrough, see the Beast of Balaur boss guide. For how this hunt fits into your early build, see the beginner guide.

Combat Weakness: Positioning, Not Elements

Community testing has not confirmed an elemental weakness for the Beast of Balaur. The hellhound does not have a fire, silver, or holy damage hole that players have identified — stacking any specific damage type does not noticeably shorten the fight. What shortens the fight is positional discipline:

  • The lunge is the opening. Every lunge attack has a recovery window of roughly a second. Dodge sideways (never backwards — the lunge tracks retreats), then close in for one or two hits. That is the entire fight.
  • Sweeps are not openings. The tail and claw arcs look similar to the lunge but have shorter recoveries. Punishing a sweep usually costs you more damage than you deal. Wait for the lunge.
  • The cave edges are safer than the center. The arena is small, and the beast’s pathing is weakest along the walls. Circling the perimeter forces it to re-angle before every attack, which stretches its patterns and gives you more reaction time.
  • No parry discipline needed. Unlike the humanoid duels, this is a pure dodge fight. Perfect Blocks are nice when they land but are not the win condition the way they are against Ambrus or Mihai.

In practical terms, the Beast of Balaur is weak to patience. Players who rush in for three or four hit combos get shredded; players who take one hit per opening and reset win with healing to spare.

Confirmed Drops

Loot the body and sweep the arena:

The last three rows are the ones most players miss. The study room is behind a raised ledge at the back of the boss arena, reachable only with Shadow Step at night. Arrive in daylight and the ledge is a dead end — you can kill the beast but not claim the Gladius.

The Gladius: Why the Drop Matters

The Gladius is a legendary shortsword with 220 DPS, fast attack speed, and a stat line built around critical damage and human-enemy effectiveness. Against mortal opponents — which describes most of the enemies you fight in the early acts — nothing else reachable this early competes. The trade-offs are printed right on the item card:

  • Damage against Supernatural Enemies: reduced
  • Activation Charge Restoration from Actions: reduced

The first trade-off matters against vampires, hellhounds, and other supernatural foes. The second slows how quickly you build activation charge for weapon arts. Both are real costs, but for the stretch of game where you are mostly fighting bandits, blood guards, and other humans, the Gladius is the strongest blade you can get your hands on.

The Phial of Brencis’s Blood is the other prize. Drinking it permanently raises Corruption to level 2 and immediately unlocks Piercing Shriek in the Vampirism tree — a skill you would otherwise unlock through story progress or skill point investment. If you are planning a night-heavy build, this front-loads a core ability for free.

Level Recommendation

PowerPyx lists no level requirement, and community runs confirm the beast is beatable at starter level with patient play. That said, a few levels from the surrounding quests make the fight noticeably more comfortable. If you are struggling:

  • Upgrade your weapon at the nearest blacksmith before the hike.
  • Stock healing items — the cave is far from the nearest vendor.
  • Do the run at night so Shadow Step is available for the study room, even if the combat itself does not require it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Beast of Balaur weak to? Positioning, not elements. No elemental weakness has been confirmed. The reliable tactic is to circle the cave edges, bait the lunge, dodge sideways, and punish the recovery window for one or two hits.

What does the Beast of Balaur drop? Psglov Claws and a Hellhound Pelt from the corpse, a Reliable Battlesword from a sarcophagus, and — in a hidden study room reachable only at night via Shadow Step — the legendary Gladius and a Phial of Brencis’s Blood.

Is the Gladius worth getting early? Yes, if you are fighting mostly human enemies. Its 220 DPS and critical-focused stats outperform everything else reachable in the early game. Against supernatural foes it is weaker, so pair it with a secondary option for vampire hunting.

Can I get the drops without fighting the boss? No. The Beast of Balaur guards the arena, and the study room is behind it. The fight is mandatory for the full reward set.
