Greifberg Prison Rescue: How to Save Coen's Family
The Greifberg prison rescue in Blood of Dawnwalker: where the family is held, how the rescue sequence works, and why it is decided before you arrive.
Somewhere in the middle of Greifberg Castle, past the tunnels and before the throne room, there is a cell block with your family’s names on it. The prison rescue is the reason the final assault exists — and the strangest thing about it is that by the time you reach the cells, everything that decides it has already happened.

Where the Rescue Sits in the Finale
The final dungeon runs in stages: tunnel infiltration, the prison, the courtyard siege, and the throne room. The prison is stage two, and it is deliberately placed early — the game wants the family’s fate settled before the fighting peaks, so the rest of the castle is about what you do with the answer.
You cannot reach the prison early, skip it, or walk past it. The assault route goes through the cell block on the way to Brencis, one way or another.
How the Sequence Plays Out
The rescue is not a puzzle and not a timed challenge. The cells open, the reunion happens, and the game moves you toward the courtyard. What the scene contains — who is in those cells, and who is not — was decided earlier:
- Esme is only in the castle if the prologue went right. The medicine brewing in Withering Away is the gate: hot water, three spoonfuls of herbs. Fail it, and Esme died in the Mass weeks ago; there is no cell for her. The full chain is in the Esme guide.
- The rest of the family is in Brencis’s hands as leverage, and leverage only works on people who care — the whole reason the parley at Shrike’s Crag is dangerous.
- Lunka is a separate track. Community-documented outcomes show she becomes a vampire regardless of the route — deal taken, parley fought, or full allied assault. Saving the family does not save her, and nothing in the prison changes that. The timeline is covered in when Lunka changes.
The One Thing That Actually Decides It
Here is the part players miss: the prison is not a choice moment. There is no dialogue in the cell block that saves or damns anyone. Family deaths in The Blood of Dawnwalker happen at the parley or through the deal — attack Brencis at Shrike’s Crag and his soldiers execute your family during the duel; accept the Turncoat deal and they survive as the price of the Manumit massacre. If you reach the cells with your allies alive, your family walks out. Full stop.
That means the real “rescue” happens days earlier, in three places:
- The prologue — brew Esme’s medicine correctly.
- The parley — refuse the deal and refuse the sword; walk away from Shrike’s Crag.
- The ally chains — finish Lacra’s and/or Crake’s quests so the assault has the force to reach the prison at all.
The family survival guide has the complete condition list, and fight or leave explains why no route lets you simply walk away with them.
If You Are Asking Because Someone Died
Reload the master save — the one the endgame guide tells you to make before A Deal with the Devil. Check three things in order: the prologue medicine, the parley dialogue, and whether the deal was ever accepted. One of those is almost always the culprit; the prison itself rarely is.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the family die during the prison rescue? No. The cell block contains no fail state. Deaths happen at the parley or through the deal, never in the cells.
Is Esme always in the castle cells? Only if she survived the prologue. The Withering Away medicine decides it — see save Esme.
Does saving the family require beating Brencis? Yes — the family leaves the castle, but the run ends at the throne room regardless. Rescue and victory arrive together.
What about the Turncoat route — is the family saved there too? They survive, yes — but the price is the Manumits, and the ending that follows is its own punishment. Compare routes in fight or take your family and leave.
