Kill the Soldiers at the Mill? The Firebrand Choice That Decides Renna's Fate

Should you kill the soldiers at Mert's mill in Blood of Dawnwalker? The Firebrand quest choice explained - and why sparing them gets an innocent woman killed.

At Mert’s Mill, an innocent woman begs you not to start a fight — and doing what she asks gets her killed. It is one of Blood of Dawnwalker’s best deceptions: the “merciful” option in The Firebrand quest is the lethal one. This guide covers the mill choice, what each path costs, and the Stoneward Post jailbreak it feeds into.

The Situation at the Mill

During The Firebrand — the quest to free Mert, imprisoned at Stoneward Post as a suspected rebel — Coen is sent to Mert’s farm to investigate. Depending on when you arrive, you meet Mert’s wife Renna under very different circumstances:

  • Arrive at night: soldiers ambush you and demand your identity. You can talk your way past by claiming to be “Mirto” — but if you fight them, Renna emerges terrified, warning that bloodshed here marks her as a rebel collaborator.
  • Arrive during the day: Renna pretends you have come to fix the cart, quietly explains the situation, and asks you — twice — to leave the soldiers hiding in the barn alone, so suspicion does not fall on her household.

Her fear is completely reasonable. It is also, from the player’s god’s-eye view, a trap.

What Actually Happens

Kill the soldiers (confront the barn, knock or announce yourself)Renna is frightened and angry in the moment — but she is alive. After you free Mert, the couple flees to the Svartrau Almshouse, and you can meet Mert there later
Leave the soldiers be (honor Renna’s request)While you are away at Stoneward Post, the soldiers kill Renna. You return to find her corpse in the farmyard

This is the rare Blood of Dawnwalker choice where the “violent” answer is the compassionate one. The soldiers in the barn are not neutral: left alive, with a rebel’s wife who has seen too much, they eliminate the witness. Renna’s plea protects her in the short moment and damns her in the long one.

The Quest Up to the Mill

The Firebrand begins after investigating Vlad’s house in Laslea, where the trail points south to Mert’s Mill and its imprisoned owner. Mert is a miller swept up in the rebellion’s margins — not a fighter, just a man whose farm sat in the wrong place. His wife Renna holds the farm alone while soldiers occupy the barn, and the quest’s tension comes from the fact that both spouses’ fates run through decisions you make but they pay for. It is one of the earliest quests where Blood of Dawnwalker teaches its signature lesson: the visibly violent option and the actually cruel option are not always the same thing.

The Jailbreak at Stoneward Post

Whichever way the mill goes, the quest continues to Stoneward Post. Useful details:

  • The Post Guard offers three entrances — visiting a prisoner, a message for the commander, or enlisting. All work; choose any.
  • You must leave your weapon behind or you will not get in.
  • Inside, when a soldier questions you, “Officer, he’s going to be sick!” costs 2 time segments but avoids a camp-wide fight. The whisper and demand options trigger combat — which, if you plan to free Mert anyway, you will be fighting regardless.

Free Mert, send the couple toward the Almshouse, and check in on them later in the Svartrau Cathedral complex for the quest’s quiet payoff.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there any way to save Renna AND avoid killing the soldiers? No. The game ties her survival directly to the barn fight. Talking your way past the night ambush does not change the barn decision later.

Does Renna’s death affect any ending? No — this is an epilogue-flavor decision, not an ending condition. What it changes is whether two refugees reach the Almshouse or one of them never leaves the farm.

What happens if I delay The Firebrand? Untested for long delays; community advice is to run this quest promptly, since Renna’s fate is effectively on a timer once you begin.

Can you come back to the mill at a different time of day? Yes — arriving by day versus night changes the opening encounter but not the underlying choice. The barn soldiers are the constant; Renna’s survival always runs through them.

Does killing the soldiers raise Infamy or Corruption? No penalties attach to this fight — it is treated as combat against legitimate hostiles.
