How to Use Haste: Faster Sprinting Day & Night

How Haste works in Blood of Dawnwalker: Mercurial Fervour by day, wolf Shapeshift by night - unlocks, the double-sprint trigger, and stamina costs.

Haste Guide cover

Standard sprinting in The Blood of Dawnwalker is deliberately slow for a valley the size of Vale Sangora - and the faster mode sitting on top of it, Haste, is easy to miss entirely. Haste is not one ability but two, split across both supernatural trees and gated by the day/night divide: learn one and you move quickly for half the cycle. This guide covers both unlocks, the trigger that trips everyone up, and the stamina math that decides how far each burst actually takes you.

The Two Haste Abilities

Both are tagged “Haste” in the ability menu, both cost a single skill point at first rank, and - critically - neither does anything in combat. They are pure traversal, and that is precisely their value: the 30-day clock punishes walking more than almost any other activity, and Haste is the single cheapest way to buy back calendar. The wolf version doubles as the game’s shapeshifting mechanic, covered in depth in the Shapeshift guide.

How to Unlock Each One

Mercurial Fervour (day): once the Witchcraft tree is available after the prologue’s supernatural awakening, open any restored shrine’s Perks menu, switch to Witchcraft, and buy the node tagged DAY ONLY. No manual, quest, or Corruption required - one point and daytime Haste is yours. It is one of the four abilities Anca teaches freely, so most players own it without noticing.

Shapeshift (night): the node lives in the Vampirism tree and carries one extra gate - Corruption level 1. Raise it the night way: subdue anything with a pulse and use Voracious Bite to drink (animals are safest), or spend a blood vial if one is on hand. A single feeding usually pushes the meter high enough. Then buy the node at a shrine for one point.

How to Trigger Haste

This is the step most players fumble, because the game never foregrounds it:

  1. Start sprinting normally (hold the sprint key - Left Shift on PC).
  2. While already sprinting, press the sprint input a second time.
  3. Haste engages: the day version paints the world slow and red-trails Coen forward; the night version drops him into the wolf and launches him across the terrain.

Owning only one version means the second press does nothing in the other half of the cycle - the single most common “my Haste is broken” report is simply a daytime player pressing shift at midnight with only Mercurial Fervour learned.

The Stamina Economy

Ordinary sprinting is free; Haste drains the stamina bar and drops back to normal sprint when it empties. At first rank the drain is real enough that Haste is a burst tool - cross the open field, recover, cross the next - rather than an unlimited mount-speed run. Both abilities upgrade out of this: Mercurial Fervour’s later ranks come from manuals and cut the stamina cost, while Shapeshift’s higher ranks want deeper Corruption and extend the wolf’s legs. One tactical note from the stamina rule: arriving at a fight winded because you Hasted into it is a self-inflicted handicap - ease off outside the arena, per the broader combat toolkit.

Why Haste Deserves Early Points

Two points - one per form - buys permanently faster transit around the clock, and the payoff compounds across the entire run: every fetch, every backtrack, every “one more errand in Svartrau” costs less of the calendar. For players optimizing the quest order, Haste is not a convenience; it is time-segment insurance, and it frees the kind of budget that makes deep builds and economy detours affordable without endangering the finale.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won’t Haste trigger? In order: wrong form for the ability you own, only one of the two abilities learned, Shapeshift still Corruption-locked, or an empty stamina bar. The trigger itself is always the same - a second sprint press while already sprinting.

Does Haste work in combat? No - both abilities are exploration-only. Combat mobility comes from Shadowstep and the rest of the night kit; see the vampire skills ranking.

Is the wolf form just cosmetic speed? Functionally it replaces night Haste - same role, different fiction - but the transformation has its own identity, upgrade track, and traversal personality, detailed in the Shapeshift guide.

Should I upgrade Haste past rank one? Rank one covers most travel needs; further ranks matter for players who spend long stretches exploring or who want the stamina back for boss attempts. Otherwise those points buy more elsewhere.
