Camp Encounters & Choices in Blood of Dawnwalker: What Actually Matters

Bandit camps, soldier camps, pickets and checkpoints - four Blood of Dawnwalker camp systems that are easy to confuse, plus real choices at Ambrus dungeon camps.

Blood of Dawnwalker has at least four different things the community casually calls “camps” — and confusing them wastes time segments and sends you to the wrong map markers. This guide untangles the camp systems and covers the one camp decision that actually matters: the Chief Jailor at the end of Ambrus’s Evil and Convenience.

Camp encounters and choices cover

First: The Four Camp Systems

SystemWhat it isHow it appears
Bandit camps (15)Open-world camps with loot; six hold treasure mapsWhite crossed-swords icons after climbing all 11 Towers
Soldier campsSeparate activity set with its own objectivesSimilar icons, different activity label — verify the name before routing
Soldier picketsSmall military positionsUnlock at Infamy Level 2
Military checkpointsRoad checkpointsAlso appear at Infamy Level 2

The trap: guides and players reuse camp numbers across systems, so “Camp 8” in a bandit list is not necessarily “Soldier Camp 8.” Always check the in-game activity label before spending a time segment. Bandit camp rewards — skill manuals, weapons, armor, Denarii — are confirmed for the bandit system; do not assume they apply to soldier camps.

The Bandit Camps: What the Choices Actually Are

Bandit camps do not have dialogue choices — the decisions are strategic:

  • Six camps carry treasure maps (reported locations include Laslea Glen, Briar Sloughs, Riverbank, Pond Islet, Split Rock, and Tantari Woods), which start the buried-cache hunt. Verified example: the Laslea Glen camp pays 100 XP, 100 Denarii, the Polished Long Cleaver (a level-5 sword with a rechargeable Weapon Art), and a recipe.
  • The other nine are chest-only — worth clearing if they sit on your route, skippable if time is tight.
  • When to raid: early, while your build still benefits from camp-tier loot; late-game the returns flatten.

The Real Camp Choice: The Chief Jailor (Evil and Convenience)

The Court activity Ambrus’s Dungeons: Evil and Convenience (Briar Sloughs, north of Borescu Commons Shrine, 3 time segments) ends inside a cabin with a man the journal simply calls the Chief Jailor. You can kill him or let him walk.

Here is the twist veteran players appreciate: the reward is identical either way. Both paths pay the Treasure Map: Hidden Stash, which leads to a fallen tree northwest of the camp and a chest holding the Amulet of Endurance, money, and a letter proving the missing blood shipments went to Bakir. The only difference is delivery — looted from his corpse, or handed over as he leaves.

So treat it as roleplay, not optimization. The surrounding camp does the storytelling: a soul near the torture chamber can be compelled for context, the Directives from Ambrus letter confirms the guards were draining victims and skimming the barrels, and the cabin ledger reveals Ambrus’s own men were diverting blood. Whether the jailor deserves to walk out of that is your call — the game scores it the same.

The Other Dungeon-Camp Decisions

Two sibling activities round out Ambrus’s dungeon camps. Twists and Turns (Maragir Wealds) has no fate choice — free the prisoners and go. Judge and Executioner (St. Tyna’s Grove) has the biggest one: two prisoners, one accusation of snitching, and documents in the camp that prove it. That decision gets its own guide — see free Branko or not — but as a rule: the paperwork at these camps always tells the truth, and searching before deciding always pays.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are bandit camps and soldier camps the same list? No. They are separate activity sets with different locations and rewards. Community guides sometimes mix their numbering — trust the in-game label, not the number.

Do camp choices affect endings? No. Camp decisions pay out in loot, XP, and epilogue flavor; none touch the eight endings.

Is the Chief Jailor choice on a timer? No. The cabin confrontation waits until you open it. Clear the camp at your own pace, compel the soul for context first if you want the full picture.

What Infamy level unlocks camp activities? Pickets and checkpoints appear at Infamy 2; the Ambrus dungeon activities arrive through his Court arc. The court system guide maps the full progression.

Are camp fights worth the time segments? Do the math per camp: a chest-only bandit camp in your route costs almost nothing, while a soldier camp off the path may pay less than the segment it consumes. Prioritize treasure-map camps and anything carrying a manual — the rest are filler for completionist runs.
