Early Mini-Boss Guide: The First Real Challenge in The Blood of Dawnwalker
Early mini-boss guide for The Blood of Dawnwalker: the Forgotten Guardian in the Deep Down prologue quest, plus the Undead Warrior and other first-act tests.
The first real challenge in The Blood of Dawnwalker is not a vampire lord. It is not a Boyar. It is a suit of animated armor in a cave, and it will kill you if you treat it like the bandits and wolves that came before.
This guide covers the early mini-bosses — the fights that teach you how combat actually works in The Blood of Dawnwalker, before the Boyar duels and the endgame start testing everything at once. For the full boss rankings, see the all bosses ranked tier list.

The Forgotten Guardian: Your First Exam
Location: Laslea Glen, a cave ruin north of the Blackwater Hollow shrine. Quest: Deep Down — the prologue’s time-sensitive dungeon crawl. Drops: Undead Warrior’s Sword (Superior Shortsword), Golden Chalice, Strong Ancient Reagent.
The Forgotten Guardian is the tutorial boss — the fight that teaches the parry-swing-execute loop before the game releases you into Vale Sangora. It wields dual hooked swords and cycles between blockable slashes and two unblockable cross-slash attacks.
Phase One: Sword and Shield
At full health, the Guardian fights with a measured sword-and-shield style. Every attack is heavily telegraphed, which is the lesson: combat in The Blood of Dawnwalker is about reading wind-ups, not reacting to speed.
- Block or parry the directional swings. Perfect parries refund gold pips and open the boss for one or two retaliatory hits.
- Do not try to outtrade his stamina. His guard is stronger than yours at this stage. Patience wins; aggression loses.
- The Overhead Slash is the parry practice target. He raises his left sword overhead with a long, obvious wind-up. This is the easiest parry in the game — learn it here because Ambrus will demand it later.
Phase Two: Rapid Flurry
At half health, the Guardian drops the shield and swings faster. The rhythm changes from measured exchanges to rapid strings.
- Stay mobile. Do not plant your feet and try to block everything — the flurry will break your guard.
- Punish the opening after his three-swing sequence. The flurry always ends with a recoverable pause. That is your window.
- Never commit to a long animation. In rapid mode, starting a heavy attack or a healing item during his string gets you punished.
The Two Unblockables
Two attacks in the Guardian’s kit are unblockable — an icon appears on the boss when they are coming:
- Running Cross Slash — he sprints at you, lifts both swords, then slashes across. Dodge away as the slash lands. Cannot be blocked.
- Cross Slash Combo — a stationary cross slash followed by both swords slashing outward. The combo is linear, so dodge sideways and position yourself for a counterattack.
These two attacks are the game’s first introduction to unblockable strings, and the same discipline — recognize the icon, dodge instead of block, punish the recovery — carries through every boss that follows.
After the Guardian: The Deep Down Loot
Do not rush past the Guardian’s corpse. The Undead Warrior’s Sword (a Superior Shortsword) is a meaningful upgrade over your starting weapon, and the surrounding chests and urns hold additional loot. Use the stairs at the back of the room to continue the quest, and make sure to activate the fast travel shrine outside before heading back — you will return to this area for another quest later.
The Undead Warrior: A Warm-Up Fight
Earlier in Deep Down, before the Guardian, you face an Undead Warrior mini-boss — a lesser armored enemy that IGN’s walkthrough flags as “tough” for the prologue. The strategy is simpler than the Guardian’s: block his normal attacks, win the battle of attrition, and loot his Superior Shortsword. This fight is the warm-up; the Guardian is the exam.
How These Fights Teach the Game
The early mini-bosses are not padding. Each one installs a combat habit that the rest of The Blood of Dawnwalker assumes you have:
- The Undead Warrior teaches blocking and attrition — the foundation.
- The Forgotten Guardian teaches parry timing, unblockable recognition, and phase-based rhythm changes.
- The Beast of Balaur (full guide) teaches dodge-only creature fights and positioning discipline.
- Ambrus (full guide) tests everything at once in your first true duel.
Players who skip or rush these early fights arrive at the Boyar duels underprepared. The thirty-day clock is generous, but the combat fundamentals are not optional.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the first boss in The Blood of Dawnwalker? The Forgotten Guardian, fought in the Deep Down prologue quest in a cave at Laslea Glen. It is a tutorial boss designed to teach the combat loop.
How do I beat the Forgotten Guardian? Block or parry his directional swings, dodge sideways through the unblockable Cross Slash Combo, and punish the recovery after his three-swing flurry in phase two. The Overhead Slash is the safest parry practice target.
What does the Forgotten Guardian drop? The Undead Warrior’s Sword (a Superior Shortsword), a Golden Chalice, and a Strong Ancient Reagent. The sword is a meaningful early-game upgrade.
Can you skip the Forgotten Guardian? No. Deep Down is a prologue main quest, and the Guardian is a mandatory gate. You must clear it to progress into the open world.
Are there other early mini-bosses? The Undead Warrior in the same quest is a lesser warm-up fight. The Beast of Balaur, west of Parlita, is the first optional mini-boss of the open world and the next step up in difficulty.
