Best Vampire Skills cover

The Vampirism tree only works after sunset, but it is not a weaker tree - it is the tree that turns night Coen from a swordsman with claws into a predator. Every ability here is paid in activation charges plus a slice of Coen’s health, which makes the ranking unusual: the best vampire skills are the ones that either refund the health tax, avoid it, or end fights before it compounds. Below is the community-consistent tier list for night builds, from the engine pieces down to the skips. For the school itself and its Corruption gates, see the skill trees explained guide.

S-Tier: The Engine Three

Voracious Bite is the tree’s foundation and the first thing every night build should own. One press deals damage, restores health, and feeds Coen - it is simultaneously the night heal, the Corruption generator, and the hunger solution. Unlike other vampire powers it does not spend activation charges; it pays in the act of feeding itself. Upgrade it early: better healing, less Corruption gain per bite, and eventually the option to feed without killing - which matters more than it sounds, because a dead civilian is infamy you did not need and a dead quest NPC is worse. A stealth bite on an unaware target can also open a fight at full health instead of full panic.

Blood Surge is the delete key. Ordinary enemies explode outright; bosses take a huge burst instead of the instant kill, and the blast tags neighbors standing too close. The cost is steep - three charges and a quarter of Coen’s health - which makes it a closer, not an opener. Never open a story duel on an empty bar with it; do open the second phase with it. In boss-tier fights it is one of the highest damage-per-press buttons in the entire game.

Shadowstep is the night tree’s signature and its best traversal tool: a short-range teleport with a visible landing marker, usable in combat and out of it. In combat it opens throats - blink behind a Blood Guard before they turn, escape a combo before the third hit. Out of combat it clips locked gates, crosses courtyards without crossing patrols, and reaches galleries that need a running start by day. Buy range upgrades before attack nodes if traversal is the problem; the Haste guide covers how it fits the wider night mobility kit.

A-Tier: The Support Picks

Piercing Shriek stuns and debuffs everything in front of Coen. It wakes entire rooms, so it is bad stealth and excellent rescue: when a swarm collapses on you, one scream thins the pile. Pair it with Blood Surge for the classic crowd answer - shriek, then detonate the biggest problem.

Shadow Storm slows the world around Coen for a window, letting claw strings and repositioning land for free. It overlaps somewhat with Shadowstep’s job, so treat it as the claws-combo piece rather than a must-buy.

Planeshift phases Coen through to a new position and functions as Shadowstep’s mobility cousin. The community advice is blunt: do not buy both in week one. Pick the one that matches your habits and revisit the other once Denarii, points, and slots are flush.

Mesmerise turns one ordinary enemy into an ally and ignores bosses entirely. Niche, but uniquely strong in the right room - a guard opening his own gate is worth more than a corpse.

B-Tier and Below: Situational

Death from Above instantly kills a target below Coen’s position (bosses take damage instead). Spectacular when a roof, wall-walk, or gallery supplies the height; useless on a flat street. It is a tool for routes that exist, not a plan.

Wall-walk enables ceiling and wall traversal, which the map rewards with shortcuts and hidden approaches. Bosses do not care about it at all.

Wolf Form is the Shapeshift perk: fast night travel, zero combat value if Shadowstep already exists, and Corruption-gated like the rest of the tree. Take it for the travel fantasy, not the power.

The Perk That Comes First

Before any of the above, buy Vrakhiri Might - the perk that widens Coen’s active-ability slots up to four. The night build is a bar-management exercise: one heal, one control, one finisher, one flex only fits if the slots exist. Feeding early banks the Corruption that unlocks the deeper nodes, and every Vampirism Ultimate sits behind Corruption 15, so the bite engine is also the progression engine.

A Default Night Bar

For players who want the answer without the theory: Voracious Bite, Shadowstep, Piercing Shriek, Blood Surge. One sustain, one escape-and-entry tool, one panic button, one closer - it covers every ordinary night and scales into endgame content without a rebuild. Slot it on the night wheel per the quick slot guide and spend the saved theorycrafting time on deciding who deserves to keep their blood.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best vampire skill to unlock first? Vrakhiri Might for the slot, then Voracious Bite - those two carry a new night build further than any damage ability.

Do claws replace these skills? No - claws are the basic-attack layer; these abilities sit on top. The claws-versus-sword question is separate, covered in the claws or sword guide.

Why does every ability cost health? Vampirism’s design tax: night power is paid in blood, and Voracious Bite is the refund mechanism. A night build that cannot bite is a build bleeding out.

Is Vampirism viable alone, without Swordmastery? Yes at night, dangerously no by day - the tree seals at sunrise. Every viable all-in night build keeps at least a functional sword kit for daylight hours.
