Forge It Anew Walkthrough: All Three Sword Shards
Forge It Anew in Blood of Dawnwalker: where to find all three sword shards, the Mihai and Munch-Munch shard-bearer fights, and the Uriashi blacksmith ritual.
Forge It Anew is the quest behind the best weapon in The Blood of Dawnwalker. The Imbued Sword of St. Mihai — highest base damage of any blade, bonus damage against vampiric enemies, a unique passive that softens the entire endgame — does not drop, does not spawn in a chest, and cannot be bought. It is forged, from three shards held by three opponents who each earned the right to carry one. This walkthrough covers the full chain. For the individual fights, see the Mihai boss guide and kobold boss guide.

What the Quest Asks
The blade of St. Mihai was broken and scattered across Vale Sangora. Forge It Anew sends you to recover three sword shards; each is guarded by a worthy — the game is explicit that the shard-bearers were chosen, not random. Once all three are in hand, the chain ends with the Uriashi blacksmith ritual that reforges the blade.
The three sub-quests can be done in any order. That flexibility is real, but the community-recommended sequence runs south-to-north as the mid-game opens up, overlapping the main route rather than detouring from it — the legendary equipment guide frames it the same way: hunting this gear is the sightseeing.
Shard-Bearer 1: Mihai, the Imbued Blade (Svartrau City)
The most famous shard-bearer is also the purest duel in the game. Mihai waits near Svartrau Cathedral — not hiding, not ambushing, standing in the open waiting for someone worth drawing against. He only spawns with Forge It Anew active, so if you have explored the capital and never met him, that is why.
The fight is a dueling exam: no adds, no phases, no tricks. Holy damage bypasses some vampiric defenses, his strings are fast but honestly telegraphed, and Perfect Block into Perfect Riposte is the entire plan. The full breakdown — stamina discipline, arena use, preparation — is in the Mihai boss guide. His shard is the reason most players start this chain at all.
Gate note: Mihai’s encounter sits behind the cathedral chain — A Monk and a Saint and the Deacon’s A Dubious Gift (see the Deacon quest fix if the quest won’t unlock). Budget time for the cathedral detour; it is worth it.
Shard-Bearer 2: Munch-Munch (North of Rockfalls)
The second shard sits in a kobold burrow in the hills near Shrike’s Crag, north of Rockfalls, guarded by Munch-Munch — an oversized corrupted kobold whose claws and breath both apply poison. This is the Hostile Takeover sub-quest:
- Block and dodge rather than trade; poison stacks punish greed
- Open with Dirty Trick — Munch-Munch is specifically vulnerable to it
- Bring healing consumables
The kill pays 250 XP, crafting materials including Kobold Bile and Kobold’s Blood, and — after spending 3 time segments looting the nest — the Sword Shard. Budget the segments before you commit; the full time economy is in the time segments guide. Fight details in the kobold boss guide.
Shard-Bearer 3: The Third Worthy
The third shard-bearer holds their piece somewhere along the mid-game path south — the quest marker reveals the position once Forge It Anew is active, and the fight follows the same pattern as the others: a worthy opponent, a clean duel, a shard. Complete any two shards and the third location clarifies on the map; the chain is designed to finish itself as you play naturally.
The Reforging: Uriashi Blacksmith Ritual
With all three shards, return to the Uriashi blacksmith to trigger the ritual that rebinds the blade. The scene is short; the sword is permanent. The assembled Imbued Sword of St. Mihai claims:
- Highest base damage of any sword in the game
- Holy/supernatural damage effective against every enemy type
- Bonus damage against vampiric foes — which describes most of the final dungeon
- A strong, unique Weapon Art
This is the weapon you want before Greifberg Castle. It does not decide your ending — nothing about Forge It Anew touches the story branches — but it decides how much of the endgame you spend struggling. The community consensus is blunt: this is the single best time investment in the game.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I do the three sub-quests in any order? Yes. All three are independent until the reforging step.
Is Mihai missable? No — he is quest-locked, not time-locked. Start Forge It Anew and he spawns. But he will not appear before the quest is active.
What level should I be? Mihai is a mid-to-late-game duel; Munch-Munch is level-flexible with poison resistance helping. Attempt the full chain once the capital and Rockfalls regions are open.
