Iulian: Poison or Save? The Lizard Gland Choice in Blood of Dawnwalker

Should you poison Iulian or save him in Blood of Dawnwalker? The Bittersweet Toast choice: the Tatzelwurm Gland, what each option changes, and the epilogue.

Should you poison Iulian, or save him? It is the quietest gut-punch in Blood of Dawnwalker’s Court arc — a nobleman volunteering his own death as a weapon against Boyar Ambrus, and one optional ingredient standing between the plan and his survival. This guide covers the whole choice chain: what Iulian asks for, what the Tatzelwurm Gland does, and what each ending costs. (Searches sometimes spell his name “Lilian” — this is the same character.)

The Setup: Iulian’s Poison Plot

Iulian Codrin, a nobleman vassal of Ambrus, approaches Coen with a plan in The Bittersweet Toast. Ambrus drinks from a servant before every duel — so Iulian intends to be that servant, with poisoned blood, killing the Boyar from the inside during The Gilded Gauntlet. The catch: the poison kills Iulian too, and he knows it. He wants it that way. His collaboration with the vrakhir has left him humiliated, and he sees this as an exit that means something.

The plan sends you through a swamp ritual with Vera’s notes — until you find Vera dead, killed by the giant lizard she was hunting. Her notebook reveals the twist: she had found a way to save Iulian all along.

The Choice: Finish the Brew or Add the Lizard Gland

Before the ritual, an optional hunt takes you to the Tatzelwurm’s lair (the Pale Ravager, a proper miniboss). Its gland is the missing ingredient Vera died for. Back at the cauldron, the game gives you the decision while Iulian isn’t looking:

Finish the brew (no gland)Iulian dies after the Ambrus duel, as he wished. The poison works on Ambrus exactly as planned.
Add the lizard glandIulian survives the poison. Ambrus is still weakened in the fight. Nothing else in the quest changes — same ritual, same ending, same reward.

Note the asymmetry: the gland saves Iulian without weakening the plan. The poison still ticks Ambrus’s health down in the duel (a meaningful edge on higher difficulties). What changes is purely whether Iulian lives to see it.

After the Duel: The Consequences

If Iulian dies, Coen can bury him and choose a moment of silence or a prayer — small, human touches the game offers no reward for. If he lives, he is visibly shaken to have survived; Coen can lie about the gland or confess. Confessing makes him furious: he severed ties precisely because survival robs his sacrifice of meaning. Lying leaves him confused and directionless.

The epilogue remembers either way. A saved Iulian appears after the credits — alive, but lost, with no idea what his continued existence is for. A dead one is simply gone, his request honored. Neither outcome grants items, abilities, or ending changes; this is one of the game’s pure role-playing choices, and the poison Ambrus guide covers the boss-side mechanics if you are weighing the whole plan.

Which Is Better?

Mechanically, the gland costs one optional hunt and gives up nothing — you can even still use the gland’s slot for a consumable on other routes, though here it goes into the brew. Iulian wants to die, and the game does not punish you for honoring that.

The stronger argument for saving him: Vera died retrieving the gland, and finishing the brew wastes her death. If that matters to your Coen, add the gland — then decide whether he ever learns the truth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does saving Iulian weaken the poison on Ambrus? No. Ambrus is still poisoned for the duel either way; the gland only changes Iulian’s survival.

Can you do the ritual without poisoning Iulian at all? No. The ritual is the quest; refusing it means not doing The Bittersweet Toast, which leaves Ambrus unweakened.

Where is the Tatzelwurm? Follow the slime trail from Vera’s body to a narrow rock gap; the Pale Ravager ambush is inside. Its unblockable spit and ground slam are the attacks to respect — dodge sideways for the spit, backwards for the slam.

What happens if I tell Iulian about the gland? He forbids it — “Don’t.” The add happens secretly, at the cauldron, while he is not looking.

Is there a time limit on the duel? Yes, and it is tight: after The Bittersweet Toast completes, you have roughly three days to trigger the Ambrus duel before Iulian’s condition becomes obvious and Ambrus brings a different victim. Since Ambrus only duels at night, plan to ring the bell by two segments before sunrise on the third day — the Brencis prep logic of respecting the clock applies all over this game.
