Midnight Reckoning Walkthrough: Lacra's Finale

Midnight Reckoning in Blood of Dawnwalker: the night assault finale of Lacra's chain, how to initiate it, and what it unlocks in the Greifberg Castle fight.

Midnight Reckoning is the last quest in Lacra’s chain and one of the two doors into The Blood of Dawnwalker’s finale. It is the mirror of Crake’s Rise at Dawn: where the Manumits attack at first light as humans, Lacra’s route attacks at night as vampires — and the castle has no idea which is worse.

What Midnight Reckoning Unlocks

Completing Lacra’s chain through The Night of Horrors makes this quest available, and completing it is what puts The Patricide ending on the menu — the darkest of the four full endings and the most personal. Lacra did not come to Vale Sangora to save anyone. She came to kill Brencis. Midnight Reckoning is where she stops waiting.

The name earns itself twice over: the assault happens at midnight, and the reckoning is hers.

How to Initiate It

Unlike most quests, this one begins with a person, not a marker:

  1. Confirm the chain is complete — everything from A Friend Like This through The Night of Horrors. The Lacra character guide has the full six-quest table.
  2. Find Lacra and speak to her to initiate the assault. The game is explicit that this is the point of no return.
  3. Make your master save before the conversation ends. This is the single most valuable save in the game — from it, you can branch to every ending. The endgame checklist walks through what must be true before you make it.

Do not skip step 3. Everything after this conversation commits you to the assault sequence.

The Night Assault: Combat Notes

The inverse of the day assault: here your vampirism is the whole plan. Community consensus from cross-verified walkthroughs:

  • Open with senses. Scout each room with vampire senses before committing — the castle’s night patrols are sparse but lethal in pairs.
  • Shapeshift for the long halls. Mobility forms turn the keep’s verticality into an express lane.
  • Save blood surge for the keep. The inner-guard clusters are exactly what area burst is for.
  • Lacra fights beside you. She is competent AI — let her split aggro, and finish what she starts.

The assault feeds into the Brencis fight, which scales based on which ally chains you finished. With Lacra’s complete, you get the version where a vrakhir who has waited centuries stands next to you — mechanically an ally phase, narratively the point of the entire chain.

Why the Finale Lands

If you did Our Rotten Roots and paid attention at the tower, you know what Brencis took from her. Midnight Reckoning does not re-explain it. It just hands her a sword and opens the door. That restraint is why The Patricide lands harder than the other endings — the game trusts you to remember, and if you saved before the final quest’s dialogue, you can see how every other ending compares. The endings guide maps all of them.

What Comes Next

The assault flows into the final quest, A Deal with the Devil, where dialogue — not combat — picks your ending. See A Deal with the Devil for how the choice actually works.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I miss Midnight Reckoning? The quest itself does not expire, but it sits behind the 30-day clock like everything else. Start Lacra’s chain early; her hidden A Mother’s Plea is missable in a way this finale is not.

Is Midnight Reckoning harder than Rise at Dawn? Opinions split. Night assault rewards vampire mastery; day assault rewards human fundamentals. Pick your route by your build, not by reputation.

Does romancing Lacra change the finale? It changes dialogue and her epilogue, not the mechanics. The assault plays the same either way.

What if I only finished half her chain? Then this quest never appears. The finale requires the complete chain — which is why the all quests guide recommends running ally chains early and in parallel.
