Kobold Bosses in The Blood of Dawnwalker: Chonk & Munch-Munch Guide
All kobold bosses in Blood of Dawnwalker: how to beat Chonk the Insatiable in Hive and Seek, and Munch-Munch the poison miniboss in the Forge It Anew burrow.
Blood of Dawnwalker has two kobold bosses, and most players walk into both of them under-prepared. Chonk the Insatiable guards the rescue at the heart of Lacra’s chain; Munch-Munch sits on a sword shard in a poison-filled burrow north of Rockfalls. Neither is complicated once you know the tells — here is everything both fights demand.

Kobold Boss 1: Chonk the Insatiable
Quest: Hive and Seek (main quest, Lacra’s chain, after Song of the Mountain) Location: Cave system in the northwestern Rockfalls hills Recommended level: 22+ | Time cost: 4 time units
Getting to the Fight
Talk to Lacra on the northwestern edge of Rockfalls and follow her into the caves — she clears the entrance for you. The route in is part of the challenge: the cave water is silver-infused and constantly damages you, so cross it with Shadowstep between rock pillars rather than wading. You will fight kobold groups on the way down, meet the hive mind, and cross paths with the Wrongs — kobold-looking monsters that deal poison damage.
The corrupted kobold you fight in the wide chamber is a Wrong, not a boss. The real fight starts when Chonk the Insatiable drops in moments later.
How to Beat Chonk
Chonk hits hard but his moveset is short and heavily telegraphed:
| Attack | Tell | Counter |
|---|---|---|
| Acid spit | Spreads his arms wide | Dodge on the wind-up, circle behind, punish |
| Lunge | Leaps forward with claws | Sidestep, attack in the recovery window |
| Standard combo | Repeated hand strikes | Read each swing direction and perfect block |
The real pressure comes from the waves of regular kobolds that join in. Do not tunnel on Chonk — thin the adds whenever he resets his distance, then return to him. The good news: once Chonk falls, the survivors scatter. There is no cleanup phase.
The Choice That Matters More Than the Fight
With Chonk dead, the Hive turns on the prisoner Isbrand and moves in to feed. Your dialogue here decides whether the quest ends calmly or in a 15-kobold brawl:
- Tell them to calm down
- Then explain they will lose their bond if they drain him
That argument is what makes the kobolds back off. Pick wrong and you fight the entire hive — winnable, but a waste of health and time segments. Talk to Isbrand after to close the quest; it feeds directly into the next step of Lacra’s chain, Our Rotten Roots.
Kobold Boss 2: Munch-Munch
Quest: Forge It Anew → Hostile Takeover (side questline) Location: Kobold burrow in the hills near Shrike’s Crag, north of Rockfalls Reward: Sword Shard, 250 XP (+ 3 time segments to loot the nest)
Getting to the Fight
The Forge It Anew questline rebuilds the shattered blade of St. Mihai, and Hostile Takeover is one of its three sub-quests — all three can be done in any order. Travel to the cave north of Rockfalls near Shrike’s Crag and push through the regular kobolds guarding the entrance tunnel. Coen comments on the smell of blood and rot — that is your warning.
How to Beat Munch-Munch
Munch-Munch is an oversized corrupted kobold — a Wrongs-variant miniboss with a proper health bar, noticeably tougher than everything before it. Both its claw swipes and its breath attack apply poison, so this is a fight about not trading hits:
- Block and dodge rather than trade — poison stacks punish greed hard, especially if your gear is behind the curve
- Open with Dirty Trick — Munch-Munch is specifically vulnerable to it
- Bring healing consumables — expect the fight to go badly if you are far under-leveled
Once it dies, sweep the room: the corpses and containers drop crafting materials including Kobold Bile, Tainted Marrow, Kobold Brain, and Kobold’s Blood. Then interact with the nest and spend 3 time segments to claim the Sword Shard — the quest ends the moment it enters your inventory. Budget those segments before you commit; the full time economy is in the time segments guide.
Which Kobold Boss Should You Do First?
Munch-Munch is the easier and more optional of the two — a self-contained miniboss guarding a quest item you can collect whenever the Forge It Anew chain reaches it. Chonk is unavoidable if you are running Lacra’s chain (and you should be — it gates the Knyazmaker ending). If both are on your board, do Munch-Munch when you are already in Rockfalls for other business, and Chonk when you are at level and ready to commit four time units.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many kobold bosses are in Blood of Dawnwalker?
Two named ones: Chonk the Insatiable (Hive and Seek main quest) and Munch-Munch (Forge It Anew: Hostile Takeover side quest). Regular corrupted kobolds and the poison-dealing Wrongs appear throughout both fights as adds.
What level for Chonk the Insatiable?
IGN recommends level 22+ for Hive and Seek, and the fight itself is a mechanics check — learn the three tells and the adds are the real threat.
Is Munch-Munch missable?
No — the burrow stays available and the three Forge It Anew sub-quests can be done in any order. It is, however, easy to walk past if you never explore near Shrike’s Crag.
What do I get for beating the kobold bosses?
Chonk advances Lacra’s chain toward the Knyazmaker ending path. Munch-Munch guards the Sword Shard (plus 250 XP and crafting materials) that feeds the Arbiter’s Blade trophy chain.
