How to Beat Xanthe in The Blood of Dawnwalker (Blood Priestess Boss)
Xanthe boss guide for The Blood of Dawnwalker: clear her adds, Shadowstep her casts, and force the melee phase where her slow blood-blade combo becomes the opening.
Xanthe is the third of the three Boyars in The Blood of Dawnwalker and the one whose boss quest breaks the pattern set by Ambrus and Bakir. Where Ambrus hands you a formal duel and Bakir dies inside his own tournament, Xanthe is a blood priestess — a ranged caster who fights from elevation, retreats when approached, and would rather not trade blows at all. Her duel, The Cycle of Love, can be unlocked the same way as the others, but the fight itself plays nothing like them. This guide covers the unlock, the two-phase combat, and the deal that lets you skip the duel entirely.

Who Xanthe Is
The three Boyars each run a different slice of the vampire court’s power. Ambrus rules through force and formal duels; Bakir, the Mad Khan, turns cruelty into games; Xanthe’s domain is seduction and manipulation — her operation runs on recruiters, abducted girls, artefact transports, and gargoyle manufacture rather than brute patrols. That personality carries into her boss quest: where Ambrus demands a duel and Bakir dies inside his own game, Xanthe is willing to talk.
Her court activity chains include Blood Guard Recruiters, Ancient Digsites, Abducted Girls, Artefact Transports, Blood Guard Mentors, and Gargoyle Manufacture, plus the memorable Home Sweet Home activity, which traps you in a looping dream at the top of Silts Tower (escaping it the right way even nets you the legendary Astrologer’s Ring — see the endings guide for how that loop works).
How to Unlock The Cycle of Love
The unlock works exactly like the other two Boyars:
- Open the Court menu and complete Xanthe’s activity chains across the regions — roughly three-quarters of them is enough to push her anger to the maximum, the same threshold at which Ambrus cracks.
- When her anger meter maxes out, The Cycle of Love appears as a main quest.
- Save before starting it. This is one of the decisions in The Blood of Dawnwalker that genuinely deserves a fresh manual save, because the choice at the end is permanent for that run.
Each court activity costs time segments — most cost 3 of the day’s 16 — so budget your evenings. The 30-day family limit is generous if you cluster her activities by region instead of criss-crossing the map.
Phase One: The Ranged Caster
Xanthe opens the fight as a pure ranged threat. She casts tracking blood bolts from elevation and retreats whenever you close the distance. The bolts are moderate damage individually, but they track — dodging sideways at the last moment is cleaner than trying to outrun them.
The critical mechanic: she has adds. Bodyguards and summoned creatures occupy the arena and protect her casts. The community-tested opening is:
- Clear the adds first. Every second you spend fighting Xanthe while her bodyguards live is a second she casts for free. The adds are not deadly alone, but they interrupt your approach and punish greedy Shadowstep aggression.
- Shadowstep interrupts her casts. The Vampirism ability closes the gap and staggers her out of the casting animation. This is the only reliable way to stop a blood bolt mid-flight.
- Use terrain and elevation. She retreats when approached, but her pathing is not perfect. Corner her against arena walls or force her into dead ends where her retreat options narrow.
Blood Surge from the Vampirism tree is particularly effective — the adds explode on death, and phase two has no bodyguards to protect her.
Phase Two: The Melee Shift
Below half health, Xanthe switches to a melee blood-blade. The community consensus: this is the easier phase, not the harder one. Her melee combo is slower than her casts — the blood-blade swings are telegraphed and punishable.
- Force the melee. Once she switches, the fight becomes a standard duel. The same Perfect Block / Perfect Riposte discipline that wins Ambrus applies here.
- Trade at your pace. Her melee damage is lower than the Boyar duels. You can afford to be more aggressive here than against Ambrus or Bakir, as long as you do not overextend into her combo’s third hit.
- No more adds. Phase two has no bodyguards. Blood Surge’s add-explosion passive is wasted here, but the damage still lands.
The Choice: Kill Xanthe or Make a Deal
At the climax of The Cycle of Love, Xanthe does something the other Boyars never do: she offers terms. You can go through with the duel and kill her, or accept her deal and walk away.
- Kill Xanthe: the threat is removed permanently, the same as Ambrus and Bakir. Clean, complete, and irreversible.
- Deal with Xanthe: she survives, and — this is the important part — she repays the deal during the final assault on Greifberg Castle, changing the final dungeon in your favor. The main quest walkthrough flags this as one of the decisions that reshapes the endgame.
Neither route locks you out of any ending: the ending is decided in the final quest’s dialogue and by the two ally questlines, not by Xanthe’s fate. The deal is simply the stronger strategic play — an extra ally inside Greifberg Castle is worth more than the satisfaction of a third duel.
After The Cycle of Love
With Xanthe resolved — one way or the other — all three Boyars are dealt with. Your Infamy hits its maximum, the Edict cutscene plays, and Brencis summons you for the final quest, A Deal with the Devil. Before you answer that summons, run the endgame checklist: finish Lacra’s and Crake’s questlines, spend your skill points, and make your master save. The Brencis boss guide explains exactly what the final fight looks like with each possible ally at your side.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you skip the Xanthe fight entirely? Yes — making a deal with her during The Cycle of Love counts as neutralizing her threat, no duel required. She is the only Boyar with a peaceful resolution.
How do I stop Xanthe from casting? Shadowstep. The Vampirism ability interrupts her casting animation and closes the gap. Alternatively, force her into terrain where her retreat pathing fails.
What is the best order for the three Boyars? Any order works. PowerPyx’s walkthrough suggests Xanthe around level 25+, after Ambrus (level 1+) and Bakir (level 20+), but the game never forces a sequence.
Does sparing Xanthe change the ending? No. Endings are decided by the final quest’s dialogue and the Lacra/Crake questlines. Her deal changes the final assault on Greifberg Castle, not the ending menu.
Is Xanthe harder than Ambrus? Different, not harder. Ambrus is a pure parry-check duel; Xanthe is an add-management fight with a caster opener. Players who struggle with parry timing often find Xanthe easier; players who hate add management find her more annoying.
