The Cycle of Love: Xanthe Quest Walkthrough
The Cycle of Love in Blood of Dawnwalker: how Xanthe's anger meter unlocks her duel, the kill-or-deal climax, and why sparing her changes Greifberg Castle.
The Cycle of Love is the third Boyar boss quest in The Blood of Dawnwalker — and the one that breaks the pattern Ambrus and Bakir set. Xanthe does not demand a duel and does not die inside her own game. Xanthe offers terms. This page covers the quest itself: how it unlocks, how the duel flows, and the choice at its heart. For pure combat mechanics, pair it with the Xanthe boss guide.

How the Quest Unlocks
The trigger is identical to the other Boyars:
- Open the Court menu and run Xanthe’s activity chains — Recruiters, Ancient Digsites, Abducted Girls, Artefact Transports, Blood Guard Mentors, Gargoyle Manufacture. Roughly three-quarters of her activities maxes her anger meter.
- When the meter peaks, The Cycle of Love appears as a main quest.
- Save before starting. The climax choice is permanent for the run, and this is one of the few decisions in the game that genuinely deserves a fresh manual save.
Most activities cost 3 of the day’s 16 time segments, so cluster them by region rather than criss-crossing Vale Sangora. The court activities guide has the routing; the time segments guide has the math.
The Duel: Two Phases
The fight inside The Cycle of Love is covered move-by-move in the Xanthe boss guide, but the shape matters for the quest flow:
Phase one — the ranged caster. Xanthe fights from elevation, casting tracking blood bolts and retreating when approached. Bodyguards and summons occupy the arena. The community-tested opening: clear the adds first, then use Shadowstep to interrupt her casts — it is the only reliable interrupt.
Phase two — the melee shift. Below half health she swaps to a blood-blade. Counter-intuitively, this is the easier phase: her melee combo is slower and more telegraphed than her casts, and no adds remain. Standard Perfect Block / Perfect Riposte discipline wins from here.
PowerPyx’s route suggests level 25+ for this duel — after Ambrus and around Bakir’s window — though the game never forces an order.
The Choice: Kill or Deal
At the climax, Xanthe does what no other Boyar does: she negotiates.
- Kill her: the threat ends permanently. Clean, complete, irreversible — same as Ambrus and Bakir.
- Take the deal: she survives, and during the final assault on Greifberg Castle, she repays it — an extra ally inside the final dungeon, changing the fight in your favor. The main quest walkthrough flags this as one of the decisions that reshapes the endgame.
Neither route locks an ending: endings are decided by the final quest’s dialogue and the two ally questlines. But strategically, the deal is the stronger play — an ally inside Greifberg Castle outvalues a third dead Boyar. Community consensus agrees, though players chasing a full-kill run for roleplay reasons lose nothing they cannot survive.
When to Do The Cycle of Love
Xanthe’s duel has no forced slot in the story — it unlocks when her anger peaks and waits patiently until you accept it. Two schools of thought dominate community routing. Finish her last and the deal’s Greifberg payoff arrives when it matters most, right before the final assault. Finish her first and her covert activity chains (Recruiters, Abducted Girls, Artefact Transports) stop bleeding time segments from your mid-game evenings. Both work. What does not work is splitting her activities across twenty scattered days — cluster them region by region, the same discipline the court activities guide preaches for all three Boyars.
After the Quest
With Xanthe resolved — either way — all three Boyars are dealt with. Your Infamy maxes, the Edict cutscene plays, and Brencis summons you to the final quest. Before answering:
- Finish Lacra’s and Crake’s chains if you want their endings available.
- Run the endgame checklist.
- Make the master save.
The final stretch is mapped in A Deal with the Devil and the Brencis boss guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you skip the Xanthe fight entirely? Yes — accepting her deal counts as neutralizing her threat. She is the only Boyar with a peaceful resolution.
What happens if I max her anger early? Nothing bad. The quest waits for you; starting it is your choice. Just save first.
Does the deal affect any ending? No. It changes the final assault’s difficulty and some dialogue — not the ending menu.
Is The Cycle of Love a main quest? Yes. It sits in the main sequence with The Gilded Gauntlet and The Lunar Game, even though its trigger is optional-leaning.
