Can you save Caitlin? Yes — but his name is Catalin, and saving him is a knife’s edge: the same moment that saves him can get Crake killed. Catalin Dragosti is the exiled heir whose army backs the Knyazmaker ending, and the choice around his survival is one of the most consequential in Blood of Dawnwalker. Here is how the rescue works, who dies in each version, and what to pick.

Save Catalin cover

Who Is Catalin Dragosti? (The “Caitlin” Quest, Explained)

Players searching “save Caitlin” or “save Catlin” are chasing the same character — the game’s spelling is Catalin. He is the son of Skender, the tyrant who ruled Vale Sangora before the vrakhir takeover. When Brencis seized the valley, the Dragosti family was destroyed — except Catalin, who fled or was abroad when the coup began.

For two years, rumors say, he has crossed Europe meeting barons, rulers, and even the Pope, gathering an army and waiting for his moment. Whether the valley would welcome another Dragosti after what his father did is, politely, an open question.

You never recruit him directly. His return is woven into Crake’s questline — the Manumit rebellion storyline that powers the Knyazmaker ending.

The Rescue: How Catalin’s Army Enters the Valley

On the Manumit finale path, Rise at Dawn (which must be completed during the day), the rebels move to let Catalin’s waiting army through. Your job is the Eastridge Outpost: storm it and open the way in.

Catalin then enters with his army — and immediately shows what Dragosti rule looks like. He executes defenseless prisoners. You can object, and if you do, two of them survive. What you do here matters later in ways the game does not warn you about.

The Throne Room Choice: Save Catalin or Let Him Die

The finale continues into Fall Before Dusk — the assault through tunnels under Greifberg Castle, kobolds in the dark, and finally the throne room, where Brencis makes one last move: he tries to murder Catalin.

Your choice in that moment decides two fates at once:

  • Save Catalin: Brencis’s attempt fails, and both Catalin and Crake live. The fight with Brencis follows in the banquet hall either way — note that on this path there is no deal to be made, since Catalin’s army cannot be stopped.
  • Let Brencis try: Someone dies. Crake will either rush forward and die defending Catalin, or let Catalin die instead. Community evidence suggests Crake’s reaction depends on your earlier conduct — players who stayed silent and let Catalin execute the soldiers at Eastridge report that Crake lets him die. Players who objected report Crake dying to save him.

What Each Outcome Costs

Catalin saved: Crake lives, the rebellion’s leadership survives — but Catalin claims the throne and begins a new rule of tyranny in his father’s image, taxes and all. You beat Brencis and got Skender back.

Catalin dies: Crake’s fate depends on your earlier choice (he dies defending Catalin, or lives having let him die). The valley becomes independent, much like the A Lone Wolf’s Hunt ending — no new tyrant, no Dragosti restoration.

There is no version where everyone wins. The game makes you choose between the heir and the revolutionary, and it grades your consistency.

The Optimal Path

For most runs:

  1. Complete Crake’s chain fully — the finale only opens through it
  2. At Eastridge, object to the executions — it saves two prisoners and positions Crake to defend Catalin later
  3. In the throne room, save Catalin if you want both named characters alive, or let him die if you judge the valley better off without a Dragosti restoration
  4. Save before Fall Before Dusk — this branch deserves both viewings

Whichever you pick, the epilogue slides will remember. Catalin’s fate is one of the details the ending narration recaps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Catalin die in Blood of Dawnwalker?

Yes. In the throne room of the Manumit finale, if you let Brencis’s attempt play out, Catalin can be killed — and Crake’s survival then depends on choices you made at Eastridge Outpost.

Is it Caitlin or Catalin?

In-game spelling is Catalin Dragosti — “Caitlin” and “Catlin” are common player misspellings, and searches using them land on the same quest.

Does saving Catalin change the ending?

The Knyazmaker ending completes either way, but the valley’s future differs: Catalin saved means a new Dragosti tyranny; Catalin dead means an independent Vale Sangora.

Can I keep both Catalin and Crake alive?

Yes — save Catalin in the throne room after objecting to the Eastridge executions. Both live, at the price of Catalin’s rule.
