The Firebrand Quest Walkthrough: Joining the Manumit Rebellion
The Firebrand quest guide: how to start the Crake/Manumit questline, keep Mert alive, and unlock the path to The Knyazmaker ending in The Blood of Dawnwalker.
The Firebrand is where the rebellion begins.
Not the fighting — you have been fighting since the prologue. The organizing. The moment when you stop being a lone wolf with a sword and start being part of something that has structure, supply lines, and a leader who knows what he is doing.
That leader is Crake. And this is his first request.

How to Unlock The Firebrand
The Firebrand becomes available in Briar Sloughs after completing Smoke and Ashes — the final main quest of the prologue. You do not need to seek it out. It appears automatically in your journal once the conditions are met.
Prerequisite: Complete Smoke and Ashes. No Infamy requirement, no level requirement, no time pressure. This is the game’s way of saying: “The prologue is over. Now choose your allies.”
The Firebrand: Step by Step
| Step | Objective | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Follow Crake and Mevasser | Stealth sections; stay crouched, use cover |
| 2 | Ask the townsfolk about Silas | Three NPCs; all dialogue options work |
| 3 | Find the house by the stone arch | Marked on map; approach at night |
| 4 | Search for Silas’s notes | Inside the house; read everything |
| 5 | Search the ruins | Follow the trail; expect enemies |
| 6 | Rescue Crake | Combat encounter; prioritize the ranged attackers |
| 7 | Lead Crake out of the ruins | Escort; move slowly, clear paths ahead |
Critical: Keep Mert alive during the opening stealth section. If Mert dies, the quest continues, but a later quest — Under Watchful Eyes — changes in ways that remove optional content. Save before starting if you want the full chain.
What The Firebrand Unlocks
Completing The Firebrand unlocks Shadows in the Woods — the quest where you meet the Manumits proper: Crake, Drogos, and Sara. From there, the chain continues:
Shadows in the Woods → Where Loyalty Lies → What Hunts the Night → What Moves the Dead → Who Pulls the Strings → Rise at Dawn / Fall Before Dusk
The full chain is required for The Knyazmaker ending. The Crake character guide has the complete quest table with locations and time costs.
Rewards
- XP: 150
- Skill Point: 1
- Unlock: Shadows in the Woods, the Manumit hideout, and the path to The Knyazmaker
The real reward is access. The Manumit chain is the longest optional storyline in The Blood of Dawnwalker, and The Firebrand is the door.
Tips
- Stealth first, speed second. The opening section is not timed. Move slowly, watch patrol patterns, and do not engage unless necessary.
- Save before the ruins. The rescue sequence has a checkpoint, but a manual save before entering ensures you can retry the approach.
- Night matters. Some objectives are easier at night, when your vampiric abilities are available. Use Planeshift and Shadowstep to bypass patrols.
How This Fits Your Run
The Firebrand is the first step in the Manumit rebellion route. It runs parallel to Lacra’s chain and Anca’s chain, and can be completed in the same playthrough as both. The endgame guide recommends completing both ally chains before A Deal with the Devil — The Firebrand is where that recommendation starts.
If you are chasing The Knyazmaker specifically, start this quest as early as possible. The chain is long, and some steps have time costs that add up.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I miss The Firebrand permanently? No. It does not expire. But delaying it delays the entire Manumit chain, which can create time pressure if you are also chasing the 30-day limit.
What happens if Mert dies? The quest continues, but Under Watchful Eyes changes. Optional content is lost. Save before the stealth section if you want the full chain.
Does The Firebrand affect any ending? Not directly. It is the first step in the chain that leads to The Knyazmaker. The ending itself is decided by choices in the final quest, but those choices are only available if you completed the chain.
Can I do The Firebrand after the prologue? Yes. It becomes available after Smoke and Ashes — the final prologue quest. There is no time limit, but starting early gives you more room for the full chain.
