Blood of Dawnwalker Worst Ending - How to Avoid Time Runs Out

What is the worst ending in Blood of Dawnwalker? Time Runs Out destroys your family and locks all good endings. Here is how to avoid it.

The worst ending in Blood of Dawnwalker is Time Runs Out. It is the only ending with no achievement, the only one where your family dies, and the only one that can ruin a 20-hour save file. Here is everything that triggers it, everything you lose, and exactly how to make sure it never happens to you.

What Makes Time Runs Out the Worst

Other endings have trade-offs. The Turncoat damns the valley but saves your family. The Folk Hero leaves the world unchanged but gives you victory. Even the early endings, while bittersweet, are chosen deliberately.

Time Runs Out is different. It is not a choice — it is a failure. The game punishes you for poor time management with the most devastating cutscene in the entire story.

Exactly What Triggers It

The 30-day clock starts immediately after the prologue. Every time you sleep, time advances. There is no pause button, no way to freeze time, no extension.

Day 30 is the absolute limit. If you reach the end of day 30 without:

  • Defeating all three Boyars
  • Completing their court activities
  • Reaching the final quest A Deal with the Devil

…then Time Runs Out triggers automatically. There is no warning. No final chance. The game simply shows you the consequences.

What You Lose

This is the most punishing ending in the game:

LossDetail
Your family diesThe entire point of Coen’s quest fails
All full endings lockedThe Turncoat, Folk Hero, Patricide, Knyazmaker are gone
All early endings lockedYou cannot even escape or stay in the dream
No achievementThe only ending with zero Gamerscore/Trophy
No completion creditThe game does not count this as “beating” the story
No NG+ unlockYou get nothing for your next run
20+ hours wastedUnless you have a save from before day 30

The Cutscene

If you trigger Time Runs Out, you see:

Brencis stands in his castle’s highest tower. Below, in the dungeons, Coen’s family hangs from chains. The camera does not look away. You see each body. Your sister. Your father. Your mother.

Coen screams. The screen fades to black.

The credits roll in silence. No music. No sound except wind.

It is the darkest moment in the game, and it is entirely avoidable.

How to Avoid It: The Complete Strategy

Track Your Days Relentlessly

The date is visible in the menu. Check it every time you sleep. Make a habit: menu → check date → sleep.

Prioritize the Boyars Above Everything

The three Boyars are the only gate to the final quest. Everything else — side quests, romance, exploration — can wait.

Optimal route:

  • Days 1-5: Prologue + immediate Boyar scouting
  • Days 6-15: First two Boyars
  • Days 16-22: Third Boyar + ally quests
  • Days 23-28: Final preparation
  • Days 29-30: Buffer for mistakes

Use the Day Planner Tool

The day planner tool calculates exactly how many days you have left and whether you can finish in time. Input your current day and remaining quests; it tells you if you need to rush.

Sleep Less

You do not need to sleep every night. Some activities can be done at night:

  • Vampire hunting
  • Stealth infiltration
  • Certain conversations

Sleeping advances time by 8-10 hours. Skip unnecessary sleeps.

Know What Costs Time

ActivityTime Cost
Sleeping8-10 hours
Court activity1 full day
Traveling between regions4-6 hours
Side quest1-3 days
Romance event1 day
Boss fight0.5-1 day

Save Before Day 25

If you are not close to the end by day 25, something has gone wrong. Reload an earlier save and optimize your route.

The Emergency Option

If you realize you will run out of time:

  1. Reload your latest save
  2. Rush directly to the nearest Boyar
  3. Skip all side content
  4. Use the missable quest checker to see what you can safely ignore

Can You Recover After Triggering It?

Technically, the game does not end. You can keep playing in a post-story Vale Sangora. But:

  • No quests remain
  • No ending triggers
  • NPCs react with pity or disgust
  • The world feels empty

Most players reload a save or start New Game+. There is no “fixing” this ending.

Is It Worth Seeing Deliberately?

For completionists: Once. It is the only ending not required for platinum, but some players want to see everything.

For trophy hunters: Skip it. You lose nothing by avoiding this ending.

For story enthusiasts: Once, if you can handle it. The cutscene is well-directed and reinforces the stakes. But it will stay with you.

The Speedrunner’s Perspective

The current Any% speedrun record is 7 hours 23 minutes of real time, which translates to under 8 in-game days. The 30-day limit is not tight for experienced players.

It only punishes:

  • New players who do not realize time passes
  • Completionists trying to do everything in one run
  • Players who explore aimlessly

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the 30-day limit apply to all difficulties?

Yes. Story mode, Normal, and Duelist all have the same 30-day limit. The limit is fixed.

Can I extend the limit with mods or cheats?

Not in version 1.0. The PC version has no official mod support yet. Trainers exist but using them disables achievements.

What happens to Esme in the worst ending?

If Esme survived the prologue, she dies with the rest of the family. If she died earlier, the cutscene shows fewer bodies, but the outcome is the same — your family is gone.

Is there any way to see the cutscene without failing?

No. The cutscene only triggers if you actually exceed day 30. There is no gallery mode or recap feature.
