Rise at Dawn Walkthrough: Crake's Assault Begins
Rise at Dawn in Blood of Dawnwalker: the day-lit assault quest that opens the Manumit finale, the human-form combat constraint, and what to finish first.
Rise at Dawn is the moment Crake’s twelve-quest chain stops building and starts burning. Quest ten of the Manumit storyline is the point of no return — the daylight assault on Greifberg Castle where Coen fights as a human, the rebellion fights beside him, and every hour you invested in the chain gets cashed.

What Rise at Dawn Actually Is
The name is the quest. Where Lacra’s finale storms the castle at night as vampires, Crake’s rebellion attacks at first light — because the Manumits are human, and humans fight in the day. Rise at Dawn is the opening phase of that assault: speak to Crake, march with the rebellion, and break the castle’s outer defenses in direct sunlight.
This creates the quest’s defining constraint: no vampiric abilities. Coen’s blood magic, shapeshifting, and vampire senses are daylight-locked for the whole sequence. Your sword arm, your witchcraft, and your gadgets are all you have. Players who poured every point into Vampirism feel this immediately; players who spread points or invested in Swordmastery glide through. The skill trees guide covers a balanced endgame spread if you need to respec — the respec guide explains where.
How to Unlock Rise at Dawn
Two requirements, both visible in hindsight:
- Finish the Manumit chain through Who Pulls the Strings — quest seven, which unlocks the rebellion’s route into the finale. The optional Distant Shadows and A Closer Look between it and Rise at Dawn are worth doing anyway (the latter contains Crake’s romance scene and is time-sensitive — complete it within the same cycle).
- Speak to Crake. The finale quest begins with a conversation, not a marker. Find him in the hideout once the chain is primed.
Rise at Dawn: Step by Step
| Step | Objective | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Speak to Crake at the hideout | Final chance to finish side content — treat it as a point of no return |
| 2 | March with the Manumits | The approach is linear; listen to the rebels’ banter — it pays off in the epilogue |
| 3 | Breach the outer wall | Human-form combat; watch for crossfire and use cover |
| 4 | Push to the castle gate | Mixed enemy types; conserve healing for the final stretch |
| 5 | Survive to the gate | The quest closes into Fall Before Dusk at the threshold |
The Combat Reality
The assault is a war of attrition by The Blood of Dawnwalker standards. Nothing here is a puzzle boss — it is sustained human-form combat against guards, soldiers, and castle defenses, with the Manumits absorbing pressure alongside you. Three rules:
- Perfect Block carries you. The same parry discipline that wins the Ambrus duel applies to every armored guard here.
- Witchcraft damage-over-time is your friend. Effects like Ravenous Flock keep ticking while you dodge, which matters when you cannot fall back on vampire burst.
- Let the rebels tank. The Manumits draw aggro. Fight beside them, not ahead of them.
For the full finale’s boss encounters and how ally presence changes them, see the Brencis boss guide — the fight has versions with Crake’s forces, with Lacra, with both, or alone, and Rise at Dawn guarantees you will never see the lonely one.
Before You Start: The Checklist
- Lacra’s chain also complete (or consciously skipped) — see the endgame guide
- Skill points spent; human-form combat verified
- Healing items and repair kits stocked
- Romance scenes and time-sensitive quests closed (A Closer Look especially)
- Master save made. This is the save that unlocks every ending in one playthrough.
What Comes After
Rise at Dawn flows directly into Fall Before Dusk, the finale proper — the Brencis confrontation and the Knyazmaker outcome, where the question stops being whether Brencis dies and becomes who rules Vale Sangora afterward. The endings breakdown is in the all endings guide, and the final quest’s dialogue mechanics are covered in A Deal with the Devil.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I go back after Rise at Dawn? No. Treat speaking to Crake as a point of no return. This is why the master save exists.
What if I built pure Vampirism? You can respec before the quest (see the respec guide) or lean on witchcraft and perfect blocking. The assault is long but not a stat check.
Does Rise at Dawn lock out Lacra’s ending? No — endings branch at the final quest’s dialogue, not here. But you only get Crake’s forces beside you if his chain is the one you finished.
Is the day assault harder than the night one? Different, not harder. The night assault (Lacra’s route) demands vampire mastery; the day assault demands human fundamentals. Community opinion splits evenly.
