How to Craft: Recipes, Alchemy & Blacksmith Upgrades
How crafting works in Blood of Dawnwalker: radial-menu alchemy, recipes found in the world, potion buffs lasting until a time segment, and blacksmith upgrade math.

The Blood of Dawnwalker answers the crafting question with unusual discipline: yes, you can craft - but only consumables, from the first minute, with no unlock quest and no skill tree gate. Equipment, meanwhile, is never crafted; it is found, quested, and upgraded at blacksmiths. Two systems, one menu philosophy, and a hidden rule that makes brewed potions dramatically stronger than they first appear. Here is everything, including the prologue’s memorization quiz that trips up every new player.
Alchemy: The Radial Menu Brewery
Crafting is unlocked from the start and lives in its own dedicated menu at the bottom-left of the radial menu. What comes out of it splits into two buckets:
- Healing items - tinctures and salves that patch Coen up in and out of combat
- Combat buffs - concoctions that boost damage, stamina regeneration, or survivability
The progression curve is recipe-driven, not material-driven: early brews are modest, but the formulas found later in the world are where the system shines. Recipes are loot - they sit in chests, cellars, and quest rewards throughout the valley. Reading one from your inventory permanently unlocks it on the crafting menu, after which the paper is vendor fodder (see the junk guide).
Gathering supports the habit: herbs and plants dot the roadsides, and focus sight highlights them as you travel. Players who gather passively never need to spend perk points on resource skills - the valley feeds a brewer who keeps their eyes open.
The Hidden Rule: Buffs Last Until a Time Segment Passes
This is the single most important crafting fact in the game, and the reason veterans call alchemy overpowered: buff durations are measured in real time, not game time - and a time segment only passes when you complete a quest. A +5% weapon damage tincture that “lasts one hour” therefore persists across every fight, camp, and detour you do between quests. Brew before a questing session and the buff is effectively permanent for that session; the 30-day clock does not tick against it.
Practical consequences:
- Brew constantly, drink liberally. A damage buff that costs two roadside herbs is a free permanent upgrade by this game’s accounting.
- Buff before hard content. Boss fights, boss-tier encounters, and camp sweeps all deserve a pre-fight round of brewing.
- Ignore the weak environmental pickups. The free 30-second stamina sips found in the world are drastically weaker than brewed potions - treat them as emergency glue, not a plan.
The Prologue Quiz: Anca’s Medicine
The game tests whether you read recipes carefully during the prologue: Anca’s medicine must be brewed from memory - three spoonfuls of herbs stirred into hot water - because the note sits in your inventory while the brewing screen refuses to display it. Memorize the formula before you start, or expect one wasted attempt and a gently mocking NPC. It is the game’s way of teaching, early and cheaply, that recipes are meant to be learned, not consulted mid-swirl.
Blacksmiths: Upgrading, Not Crafting
Gear follows a separate track. There is no equipment crafting - Legendaries come from quests, bosses, and caches (see the legendary hub) - but blacksmiths upgrade what you find, and the upgrade economy is where Denarii truly burns:
- Upgrading a weapon from +0 to +10 costs roughly 31,150 Denarii, plus 122 Refined Silver Ingots and 1 Consecrated Saint Ingot - and only three Saint Ingots exist per playthrough, so they must be rationed across your entire arsenal.
- Silver refinement runs through the Crucible of St. Mihai, converting contraband ore into upgrade material - the other half of the silver economy, and the reason its sale price must be weighed against your upgrade plan.
- Every smithing visit costs exactly one in-game hour, regardless of volume. One upgrade or a full batch of fifty smelts - same hour. The golden rule: never visit a blacksmith with a single item. Bank upgrades until you can batch everything into one session, and see the farming guide for funding the bill.
Special forge quests sit on top of the regular track: Forge It Anew reforges a broken relic sword through a shard hunt and a Uriashi smith’s ritual (the best weapons guide covers the result), and the Arbiter armor set is crafted through its own lengthy quest chain rather than a menu.
Putting It Together: The Crafter’s Loop
- Gather herbs passively while traveling; never detour for them.
- Read every recipe the moment it drops, then sell the paper.
- Brew before questing sessions and drink buffs freely - they expire only when the story moves.
- Bank materials (see storage) and batch every blacksmith visit into one hour.
- Spend Saint Ingots like they are irreplaceable - because they are.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is crafting worth investing perks into? Generally no - passive gathering covers ingredient needs, and perk points buy more power on the skill trees. The exception is a dedicated alchemist roleplay build.
Can I craft weapons or armor? No. Equipment comes from quests, bosses, and exploration; blacksmiths only upgrade existing pieces.
What happens if I fail Anca’s medicine? You retry the brewing; the quest does not break. The lesson is the point, not the punishment.
Should I sell silver or refine it? Early: sell surplus to fund trainers (via the Silver Trader). Once your endgame weapon is chosen, bank ore for the +10 refinement - 122 ingots is a serious stockpile.
Do crafted buffs stack? Different buff categories (damage, stamina, defense) coexist; duplicate types obey the strongest-active rule. Slot the full suite before a boss, per the quick-slot guide.
