Claws or Sword: Which Combat Style Should You Choose?

Claws or sword in Blood of Dawnwalker? The honest comparison: damage, upgrade economy, day/night rules, and which style wins for each build.

Claws or Sword cover

“Claws or sword?” is the first real build question The Blood of Dawnwalker asks, and the internet answers it loudly in both directions. The honest answer is that the two styles are not competing for the same job: one is a free, night-bound weapon that scales with your vampire progression, and the other is an all-day platform that scales with your wallet. The choice is really about which half of the day-and-night cycle you want to own - and about how much of the 30-day clock you are willing to spend funding your damage.

How Claws Work

Claws come online at sunset as part of Coen’s vampire form - no purchase, no equip, no durability. Community testing repeatedly finds their damage competitive with, and sometimes ahead of, an equivalently leveled sword, which makes them the most cost-efficient damage source in the game. Their ceiling is the Vampirism tree itself: the deeper your Corruption and claw-related nodes, the harder they swing. The trade-offs are structural:

  • Night only. At sunrise the claws go away and the style goes with them.
  • No blacksmith track. Swords upgrade through the +0 to +10 refinement system (see crafting for that economy); claws grow through the tree alone, which makes their mid-game spike cheaper but their late ceiling more Corruption-dependent.
  • They pair with the night kit. Claw builds want vampire abilities - Shadowstep entries, Piercing Shriek setups, Blood Surge finishers - because claws have no answer to armor the way sword abilities do.

How Swords Work

The sword is Coen’s only weapon that works in both forms, and it is the spine of the game’s combat literacy: directional attacks, perfect blocks, and weapon arts all run through Swordmastery. Its damage scales through blacksmith upgrades - expensive, but permanent and transferable to any new Legendary you find (the weapons ranking covers which ones merit the investment). Critically, the sword is the only style that composes with Witchcraft: daytime hexes like Soul Stigma and Burning Blood multiply sword damage, and the activation-charge economy rewards the block-and-punish rhythm that swordplay teaches. A sword build is playing two systems at once; a claw build is playing one system very hard.

Which Should You Choose?

Pick claws if you want the strongest night presence for the least investment, you enjoy the vampire ability bar, and your day plan is social - quests, exploration, and economy errands rather than combat. Claw builds are also the natural home of low-infamy runs: the night is when you hunt, and hunting is free.

Pick sword if you want one combat identity around the clock, you intend to invest in a single upgraded Legendary, or you want the full hex-plus-steel combo that the Witchcraft tree enables. Sword builds spend more Denarii and more planning, and they own the daylight hours that claw builds write off.

Pick both if you are pragmatic - and most successful players are. The shared skill point pool and the build guide both point the same way: a functional sword core with vampirism investment on top outperforms either purist build across a full day-night cycle, because the game punishes single-axis answers. The real decision is not claws versus sword; it is which one gets your upgrade budget, and that answer should match the half of the cycle where your story actually fights.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are claws better than swords late game? Community reports are mixed: claws stay competitive through the mid-game on Corruption alone, while a fully upgraded Legendary sword with crit gear pulls ahead in sustained boss damage. The gap is smaller than the debate suggests.

Do claws scale with anything I can upgrade at a blacksmith? No - claws are not equipment. Their scaling is the Vampirism tree and Corruption, which is why claw builds should bank feeding time.

Can I respec if I invested in the wrong style? There is no native respec - points are permanent per playthrough (see the respec guide), so test both styles early before committing deep.

Does the choice affect armor? Yes, more than anything else. Claw builds want vampiric armor like Isbrand’s Plate; sword builds want crit and stamina pieces - see the armor ranking.

If I go hybrid, what order do I invest in? Community consensus: sword core first (it carries both halves of the cycle), vampirism second once night combat becomes your identity, and Witchcraft only if the day hex playstyle specifically appeals - the three-school overview in skill trees explained shows why spreading into all three starves every tree.
