Night Terrors Quest: The Cathedral Well & What Lies Beneath
Night Terrors quest guide: approach the Svartrau Cathedral well at night, uncover what haunts the courtyard, and survive what comes up from below.
The Svartrau Cathedral is quiet during the day. Pilgrims come, prayers are said, candles are lit. The monks move through their routines with the patience of men who have nowhere else to be.
At night, the cathedral screams.
Not literally — though some nights, you might wish it were only sound. The well in the courtyard, cold and forgotten during daylight hours, becomes something else after dark. A focal point. A wound. A place where whatever the cathedral was built to contain tests the walls.

How to Unlock Night Terrors
Requirement: Nighttime. The quest does not exist during the day.
Location: Svartrau Cathedral courtyard. Approach the well on the northern flank of the main cathedral. As you get close, the quest triggers automatically — a sound, a visual distortion, a sense that the air is wrong.
Prerequisite: None. This is one of the few quests in The Blood of Dawnwalker with no gate beyond time of day. If you can reach the cathedral at night, you can start Night Terrors.
Night Terrors: Step by Step
| Step | Objective | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Approach the cathedral well at night | The trigger radius is small; walk directly to the well |
| 2 | Investigate the disturbance | Use Focus Mode; interact with the well |
| 3 | Descend into the well | The ladder is hidden; look for the interactive prompt |
| 4 | Explore the hidden chamber | Torchlight required; bring oil or use witchlight |
| 5 | Survive the encounter | Combat; spectral enemies vulnerable to holy damage |
| 6 | Seal the chamber | Interact with the altar at the chamber’s end |
Critical: Bring holy damage — the blessed sword from A Monk and a Saint, silver ammunition, or a witchcraft ability with sanctified properties. The enemies below are resistant to standard steel and nearly immune to blood magic.
What You Find Below
The chamber beneath the well is old — older than the cathedral, possibly older than Svartrau City itself. It is not a crypt. It is a containment. Something was placed here, sealed here, and the cathedral was built on top of it as much to keep it down as to worship above it.
The game does not tell you what it is. The monks do not know. The few records that mention it use words like “the below” and “the patient one” and “that which waits.” Whatever it is, it is not dead. It is not sleeping. And on certain nights, it pushes against the walls.
Night Terrors is the night it almost gets through.
Rewards
- XP: 150
- Denarii: 40-60
- Unlock: A Monk and a Saint (alternate path), access to the hidden chamber for future exploration
- Choice-dependent: Whether you seal the chamber permanently or leave it open affects a later ambient event
The Choice: Seal or Leave
At the chamber’s end, you find an altar. Interacting with it gives you two options:
Seal the chamber — The altar activates, the walls thicken, and the disturbances stop. Future visits to the cathedral at night are quiet. The monks never know what you did.
Leave it open — You walk away. The chamber remains accessible. The disturbances continue. And on certain nights, if you return, you find things have changed — new items, new enemies, new whispers. The risk is real, but so is the reward.
The choices guide explains how consequences branch, though this choice is one of the game’s more obscure — most players never learn it exists.
How This Fits Your Run
Night Terrors is a side quest with no ending impact. It exists for atmosphere — to make Svartrau City feel like a place with history, with secrets, with things that predate the vampire occupation and will outlast it. If you are exploring at night, it triggers naturally. If you are following Anca’s chain, it connects to A Monk and a Saint through the cathedral’s shared location.
The all quests guide has the full list of side content and their rewards.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I miss Night Terrors permanently? No. It triggers every night you approach the well. But if you complete the main story without doing it, you must reload a save to access it.
Does sealing the chamber affect any ending? No. It affects ambient events at the cathedral and the availability of certain items, but no ending is gated by this choice.
What are the spectral enemies weak to? Holy damage. Silver works. Standard steel is nearly useless. Blood magic heals them.
Is Night Terrors connected to Xanthe? No. Xanthe can be fought at the cathedral in a separate encounter, but Night Terrors is its own quest with its own story.
