Brencis Grotesque Ascendant: The True Final Boss of The Blood of Dawnwalker

Brencis Grotesque Ascendant boss guide: the Anachora phase of the final fight. Survive the many-limbed horror form and unblockable attacks.

Draining Brencis’s first health bar does not end the fight. It transports you somewhere worse.

Anachora — the hell reserved for vampire souls — is where Brencis sheds the courtly mask and shows what a Knyaz of Vale Sangora actually is. The Grotesque Ascendant form is not a powered-up Brencis. It is a different enemy, with different rules, and treating it like a continuation of phase one is the most common way runs end at the final hurdle.

Brencis transformed into the Grotesque Ascendant, a many-limbed horror in Anachora

What Changes in Anachora

The rules you learned in phase one stop applying.

Wraith summons disappear — no more crowd control. But Brencis’s reach extends far beyond what his body suggests, thanks to branching malformed limbs that strike from angles the humanoid form never used. The arena feels smaller because it effectively is: his limbs close distance you thought was safe.

Most critically, not every attack is blockable anymore. The shield icon you relied on in phase one becomes rare. Skull icons dominate. This is a dodge fight now.

The Attacks That Kill You

Many-Limbed Horror — Brencis strikes with multiple malformed limbs in sequence. Each individual swing is slow. The danger is the rhythm: they come in patterns that punish panic-rolling. Watch for the full string to end before punishing. One safe hit, then reset.

Belching Blood — A torrent of blood spews from his mouth in a frontal cone. The wind-up is long, but the coverage is wide. Circle to his flank during the wind-up; do not try to outrun the spray backward.

Displacement — The screen flickers. Brencis teleports to your location. There is no audio cue; the visual flicker is the cue. When you see it, move. Do not finish your attack animation. Do not try to block. The follow-up after displacement is almost always unblockable.

How to Actually Fight Him

Circle, don’t retreat. Retreating backward gives his limbs time to reach you. Circling keeps you in the pocket where his tracking struggles. Lateral movement near the arena edge is safer than mid-range spacing.

Spend your healing in phase one. Testing confirms a health reset at the transition to Anachora. Entering phase two with unused healing items is wasting them. Use what you need to survive phase one cleanly; you start phase two fresh regardless.

Keep one mobility ability in reserve. Camera angles in Anachora are worse than phase one. When the camera fails you — and it will — you need a Shadowstep or equivalent to escape a blind angle.

Do not greedy-follow. After the first safe hit, disengage. The Grotesque Ascendant’s retaliation strings are longer than they look, and the second hit of his counter often catches players who thought the opening was longer.

The Ally Mechanic Most Players Miss

If you invited the boyars’ souls into Coen during their respective quests — Ambrus, Bakir, Xanthe — they manifest in Anachora to fight beside you.

  • Ambrus performs his Eightfold Slice, dealing heavy burst damage
  • Bakir uses his Flying Kick, repositioning aggressively
  • Xanthe casts Wicked Tendrils, striking from range

This is not cosmetic. Their damage is real, their aggro is real, and their presence turns a solo endurance test into a manageable fight. If you are struggling with the Grotesque Ascendant and skipped the “invite soul” options earlier, that decision is why.

The endings guide explains how to structure your run to keep every ending available while still inviting souls — the two are not mutually exclusive.

Preparation Checklist

  • Legendary weapon, fully repaired — the Imbued Sword of St. Mihai from the Forge It Anew quest is the community standard
  • All healing items used in phase one — health resets in Anachora
  • One mobility ability — Shadowstep or equivalent for camera escapes
  • No greed — one hit, then reset, every time

Where This Fits

The Grotesque Ascendant is the final combat challenge in The Blood of Dawnwalker. Beating him triggers the ending sequence determined by your choices in A Deal with the Devil — the Brencis guide covers the humanoid phase and how to reach this point.

If you are struggling, the answer is almost always: clear more court activities, finish more quests, and arrive with better gear. The Grotesque Ascendant is a gear check in a way phase one is not.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you skip the Grotesque Ascendant fight? No. Even the Turncoat ending — which skips the phase one duel — transitions to Anachora if you attack Brencis at the parley. The only way to avoid this fight entirely is the peaceful Turncoat route with no betrayal.

Does the health reset work both ways? No. You start phase two at full health regardless of how phase one ended. This is confirmed by testing and is why spending healing in phase one is correct.

What happens if you die to the Grotesque Ascendant? You respawn at the checkpoint before A Deal with the Devil. The phase one fight must be repeated. This is why a manual save before the final quest is mandatory — see the endgame guide.

Is the Grotesque Ascendant harder on Duelist difficulty? Yes, significantly. The unblockable strings are faster, and the displacement follow-up has less recovery. Duelist players should treat this as the hardest fight in the game and prepare accordingly.
