How to Sell Silver: Best Prices, Vendor & Unlock

Silver is contraband in Blood of Dawnwalker and only one merchant buys it. Unlock the Svartrau Silver Trader, check prices, and chase the Smuggler achievement.

How to Sell Silver cover

Silver is the most valuable thing in your inventory that you cannot sell - until it suddenly is not. Goblets, platters, crosses, and raw lumps stamped with the White Chalice tag are contraband in Vale Sangora, and every ordinary merchant in the game will wave you away. Exactly one fence exists: the Silver Trader in Svartrau, hidden behind a short quest chain (or a much darker alternative). Unlocking him is one of the highest-value early errands in The Blood of Dawnwalker, and this guide covers both routes, the economics, and the achievement he feeds.

Why Silver Matters So Much

Denarii gates real power: sword-mastery trainers, witchcraft guides, blacksmith upgrades, and the pricey materials behind top-tier gear. Community testing puts the cost of a fully upgraded weapon at tens of thousands of Denarii once silver refinement enters the picture (see crafting for the full upgrade math). Silver items sell for hundreds of Denarii apiece - an order of magnitude above junk - and they start appearing in loot around the first week of the story. A player who unlocks the trader early banks several thousand Denarii without farming anything; a player who does not drags a fortune in unsellable tableware around the valley.

Where the Silver Trader Is

The Silver Trader runs a stall in Svartrau, the hub city that opens after the prologue. Once you get close, he appears on the map with a goblet icon. Community guides place him in the city’s market districts (the Neustadt/Altermarkt area), but the icon makes navigation academic. What matters is the gate: approach him cold and he tells Coen to get lost.

The intended unlock is a compact detective trail starting almost immediately after the prologue:

  1. Head northwest from Glen toward Blackwater Hollow. The cave you want sits directly north of the hollow, near the Darkwood Den and Blackwater Hollow shrines - easy to fold into early exploration.
  2. Kill the Ravenous Bear inside. It is a genuine early miniboss, so bring healing items and treat the fight seriously.
  3. Loot the corpse holding the Tattered Letter in the cave’s rear. Reading it starts the trail.
  4. Follow it to a small hut marked with an X, near the sanctuary in the northern foothills. Loot the second note - the Letter with a Tip - which identifies the silver buyer.
  5. Return to the Silver Trader and choose “I know you trade in silver.” His stock flips, and every White Chalice item in your pack becomes sellable - permanently, for the rest of the playthrough.

The whole chain costs one bear fight and a short walk. There is no reason to skip it, and one very good reason not to: the Smuggler achievement.

Route 2: Infamy Level 4 (The Shortcut With a Bill)

The alternative key is narrative: raise your Infamy with the vampire court to level 4 and the trader will deal with you on reputation alone - no cave required. The catch is what Infamy 4 costs. High infamy raises prices across the entire valley, damages your standing in Svartrau, and pushes you toward outcomes covered in the infamy system guide and the infamy edicts list. Unlocking a merchant by becoming the kind of person who scares merchants is thematically perfect and practically expensive. Only take this route if your build already wants a high-infamy run; never grind infamy for the trader when the bear cave is right there.

What Sells, and For How Much

Once unlocked, the trader buys every contraband category:

  • Lumps of Silver and Silverware
  • Silver Crosses, Chalices, Bowls, and Platters

Individual pieces typically move for a few hundred Denarii each, with the trader’s deep purse making him the best bulk buyer in the game. Two efficiency notes: the Bewitching Influence perk raises your sale prices by roughly 15%, so grab it before a big liquidation; and batch the trip with other city errands so a silver run never costs a dedicated time segment on the 30-day clock.

A related edge: one Svartrau resident will sell you silver at below the trader’s buying price. Buy out their stock, walk it to the fence, and pocket the clean margin - a rare arbitrage the game plainly intends you to notice. The farming guide covers this loop plus every other Denarii engine worth running.

The Smuggler Achievement

Selling 1,000 Denarii worth of silver to the trader unlocks the Smuggler achievement/trophy. Community math puts that at roughly 150–200 silver items over a playthrough - very reachable if you unlock him early and loot camps diligently, but note the stakes: if the trader dies or becomes unavailable mid-playthrough, the achievement is unachievable on that save, and no substitute merchant exists. One more argument for unlocking him in week one and selling early and often rather than hoarding until month-end.

Until He Is Unlocked: Stash, Do Not Carry

Silver ore and silverware found before the unlock are dead weight in your pack. Dump them in the shared shrine stash - every activated shrine accesses the same storage, so nothing is ever stranded - and liquidate in one satisfying session once the bear cave is done. The stash guide covers the mechanics; the short version is that storing costs nothing and advances nothing, making it the perfect waiting room for contraband.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I sell silver to regular merchants? No. The White Chalice tag marks it as contraband, and ordinary vendors refuse the trade outright - which also means you cannot accidentally liquidate silver at a loss.

Does silver ore behave the same as silverware? Both are contraband under the White Chalice system and both funnel to the Silver Trader; raw lumps simply appear in loot slightly earlier and stack more efficiently.

What if I lost access to the trader after unlocking him? Community reports indicate his death or unavailability locks the contraband economy permanently on that save - stockpiled silver becomes unsellable and the Smuggler achievement can become unobtainable. Protect the man once you have him.

Is Infamy 4 or Into the Den faster? Into the Den, and it is not close: the quest chain is a single bear fight and a hike, while Infamy 4 demands sustained story choices with economy-wide price penalties attached.
