Sunken Ruins Arena cover

The Sunken Ruins Arena is the flooded fighting pit of the Eastern Steppes - half-drowned stone, nomad banners, and the stage for one of The Blood of Dawnwalker’s most mechanically distinctive boss encounters: the forced duel against Bakir the Mad Khan. This is not a boss you walk up to. Bakir refuses challengers until the valley has provoked him into it, and the arena itself hides one of the game’s four Sanzhani Chrysalis Rifts. Everything about reaching the fight, winning it, and looting the neighborhood, below. For Bakir’s broader role in the hunt structure, see the Bakir boss page.

Where It Is and How to Get the Fight

The arena sits in the Eastern Steppes, the nomadic plains east of the central valley, near Bakir’s war encampment. But arriving at the ruins is not enough - Bakir will not face challengers until his Vassal Anger Level reaches 100% across the region. Raising it means harassing his operation directly:

  1. Sabotage the Khan’s horse corrals scattered around the steppes.
  2. Intercept the courier carrying Brencis’s war missive before the message moves.

Community guides recommend level 20+ before provoking the duel, and the encounter is designed as a night fight - Coen’s bat sensory pulses (his vampire detection) cut through the steppe darkness and the arena’s flooded sightlines. Schedule the fight after dusk and arrive fed.

The Fight: Mounted Phase First

The duel opens with Bakir on his white armored war steed, flanked by two mounted Kheshig bowmen - and the opening priority is the escort, not the Khan:

  • Eliminate the Kheshig bowmen immediately, using piercing thrusts. They ride at range and punish tunnel vision on Bakir; leaving them alive converts a duel into a crossfire.
  • Apply Frost Grease to slow Bakir’s dual-curved scimitar flurries by roughly 25% - the community-tested opener for this fight.
  • Read the alternating horizontal sweeps and answer them with directional parries. Bakir carries heavy poise (140 in community datamining), and shattering it through parries is the fight’s main damage window.
  • Bakir dismounts at roughly 60% health, after which the fight becomes a standard but fast foot duel.

His documented weakness profile favors holy silver and frost approaches; for full weakness tables and phase breakdowns, cross-reference the boss weaknesses hub.

The Steppe Peacemaker Trophy (Missable)

The Steppe Peacemaker silver trophy requires defeating Bakir without killing his ceremonial war steed - and it is genuinely missable:

  • Window: roughly Day 12 to Day 18.
  • The rule: no sweeping horizontal cleaves while the steed is near the fight. Wide arcs are what kill it incidentally.
  • The technique: lock onto Bakir’s torso and fight with vertical High Stance attacks and thrusts until he dismounts, then lure him away from the steed before the kill.

Damaging the horse with wide cleaves, or arriving outside the window, voids the trophy for that save. Trophy hunters should plan the whole steppe visit around this constraint - everything else in the region can wait.

Rewards

The arena duel pays out across the rest of the game:

  • Shadowstorm combat skill - the time-slowing vampiric power, immediately slottable on the night bar (see the vampire skills ranking).
  • Nomadic Recurve Bow - a strong ranged option for human-form play.
  • Blood Aegis reduction - the hunt against Bakir permanently weakens the vampire lords’ shared protection, dropping Blood Aegis from 60% to 30% against subsequent targets.
  • Unlocks the hunt for Xanthe - Bakir’s fall opens the next lieutenant thread (see the Xanthe choice for where that hunt ends).

Next Door: The Sunken Spire Chrysalis Rift

South of Bakir’s encampment stands a flooded belltower - the Sunken Spire, one of the valley’s four Sanzhani Chrysalis Rifts. Commune with the moth spirit inside and activate Temporal Respite for a +48-hour rollback on the campaign clock - one of the only ways time flows backward in this game, and a reason to route the steppe visit late in a tight run. The full chrysalis network and the other three rifts are covered in the Sanzhana locations guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bakir won’t spawn at the arena - why? The Vassal Anger Level is not yet at 100%. Finish the corral sabotages and intercept the courier; the duel triggers once his patience breaks.

What level should I be for this fight? Community guides recommend 20+. The mounted phase punishes underleveled damage, and the bowmen punish low sustain.

Is the steed trophy really missable? Yes - both by killing the horse with wide attacks and by missing the Day 12-18 window entirely.

Is the arena a one-time visit? The duel is, but the Sunken Spire rift and the steppe camps remain visitable afterward - and the Blood Aegis reduction is permanent for the save.
