How to get the Turncoat ending in Blood of Dawnwalker. Betray your allies, side with Brencis, and save your family - the complete walkthrough.

The Turncoat is the betrayal ending in Blood of Dawnwalker. Instead of fighting Brencis, you strike a deal with him: your family’s safety in exchange for your loyalty. It is the only full ending with no final boss fight, and it has the most complex moral weight of any path.

Turncoat Ending cover

What Is the Turncoat Ending?

In The Turncoat, Coen abandons the rebellion, his allies, and his mission. He kneels to Brencis and accepts a place at his side. In exchange, Brencis spares Coen’s family and grants them safe passage out of Vale Sangora.

The ending is bitter. You save your family, but you dammn the valley. The slave rebellion collapses without you. Crake is executed. Lacra is killed or exiled. The Boyars continue their rule.

But your family lives.

Requirements

The Turncoat has fewer requirements than other full endings, but they are specific:

  1. Defeat all three Boyars — You still need to complete the court activities and eliminate Brencis’s rivals
  2. Finish within 30 days — The time limit applies to all full endings
  3. Reach A Deal with the Devil — The final quest triggers automatically after the third Boyar falls
  4. Do NOT complete Lacra’s full questline — If you have romanced Lacra, she will interfere with the betrayal
  5. Do NOT complete the Manumit chain — Crake’s rebellion must be weak enough to abandon

Walkthrough: Step by Step

Step 1: Weaken Your Allies (Days 1-20)

The key to The Turncoat is not building strong relationships. This is the opposite of other endings.

  • Crake/Manumit: Complete at most 2 quests in the chain. Do not finish Shadows in the Woods. If you advance too far, Crake will trust you, and betraying him becomes emotionally harder (though still possible).
  • Lacra: Complete her early quests for rewards, but do not finish her full chain. Do not romance her.
  • Anca/Farkas: Their opinions do not affect this ending.

Focus on the main quest: the three Boyars. You need them dead (or defeated) to trigger the final quest.

Step 2: The Betrayal Dialogue (Day 20-30)

When you reach A Deal with the Devil, Brencis offers you a choice. The dialogue options are:

  1. “I will never serve you.” — Leads to the fight (Folk Hero path)
  2. “Lacra and I will stop you.” — Leads to The Patricide (if Lacra is present)
  3. “Crake’s rebellion will end you.” — Leads to The Knyazmaker (if Manumit is strong)
  4. “What do you offer?” — This begins The Turncoat path

Select option 4. Brencis will lay out his terms: give up the Manumit hideout in Svartrau, and your family lives.

Step 3: Accept the Deal

After hearing the terms, you get a second choice:

  1. “I accept.” — Lock in The Turncoat
  2. “I would rather die.” — Return to the fight

Select option 1. There is no going back after this.

Step 3b: Mark the Hideout

Post-launch verification confirms the concrete act of betrayal: travel to the Manumit hideout in Svartrau and leave a marker on the door for Brencis’s forces. The moment you do, Brencis strikes — he sweeps in and murders the Manumits where they sleep. This is the point of no return for the rebellion, and it happens because of a door you marked yourself.

If you have advanced Crake’s chain far enough that he fully trusts you, one final conversation before the finale — telling him the rebellion is doomed — is what makes the betrayal dialogue available at all.

Step 4: The Aftermath

The ending cutscene shows Coen kneeling before Brencis. Your family is brought out — alive, but guarded. Brencis announces Coen as his new enforcer.

The credits roll over a montage: the rebellion crushed, Crake’s body hanging from the castle walls, Lacra fleeing into exile, and your family boarding a carriage out of the valley.

In the final shot, Coen stands at Brencis’s side, staring at nothing.

What You Unlock

  • Achievement: A Deal with the Devil (same as all full endings)
  • Achievement: The Turncoat (unique to this path)
  • Title Screen Change: The main menu background changes to show Coen in Brencis’s colors
  • New Game+ Bonus: Starting NG+ after The Turncoat unlocks the “Enforcer” outfit — a black and red variant of Coen’s default armor

What You Lose

  • Crake’s fate: Executed. His rebellion dies with him.
  • Lacra’s fate: If she survived to this point, she is exiled or killed resisting arrest.
  • Laslea’s fate: The slaves remain in chains. No revolution.
  • In the Nick of Time: You do get this achievement — your family is saved.

Why Choose This Ending?

The Turncoat is for players who prioritize Coen’s personal story over the world’s salvation. It is the most selfish ending, but also the most human. Coen is a father before he is a hero.

Some players also choose it for practical reasons: it is the only ending with no final boss fight. If you are struggling with Brencis’s second phase, The Turncoat lets you skip it entirely.

The Hidden Cost

In New Game+, if you completed The Turncoat, you will find minor changes:

  • NPCs in Laslea react with fear when they see you
  • Some side quests are unavailable (Crake’s chain is gone)
  • Unique dialogue with Anca where she expresses disappointment

These changes persist for that NG+ run only.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I romance Lacra and still get The Turncoat?

No. If you have completed Lacra’s full questline and romanced her, she will confront you during A Deal with the Devil. You can still betray her, but this leads to a unique variant where she fights you alongside Brencis. This is harder than the standard Folk Hero fight.

Is The Turncoat the “evil” ending?

Not exactly. It is the selfish ending, but the game does not judge you for it. The cutscene is somber, not punishing. Brencis keeps his word — your family is genuinely safe.

Can I get The Turncoat after completing the Manumit chain?

Yes, but it requires a specific dialogue choice to abandon the rebellion. If Crake is fully committed, you must tell him “The rebellion is doomed” during your last conversation before A Deal with the Devil. This crushes his morale and makes The Turncoat available.
